Everyone says girl on top is best because that way the girl can control the pace/depth and all. I lost my v-card in cowgirl and it was horrible. Pain was minimal, yes, but not sure how much of that was because of the position. I had no clue how to move though. The motions with my hips, where to put my hands, etc., all seemed very foreign to me.
If you're losing it with a guy who you care for, missionary is the way to go. Least risk for pain during sex in general, even after the fact. If he's a decent guy, he'll know to not go too fast, and you'll be fine.

I tried that initially too but truth be told, I can no idea how to move in that way in the first place, let alone worry about the specifics. Much better experience with missionary, agreed.

I think Missionary would be best, it is the most natural. I think you are likely just super nervous and therefore tense and tightening your muscles. Just try and relax and have him start slowly.
I think a lot of your problems would go away i you relaxed... the only girls who I know who said their first time hurt were the ones who got worked up over it. the ones who were cool and relaxed enjoyed it right away- no pain like the movies and such.
Missionary. The guy has to be able to look at you in the eyes. He needs to see on your face if he's hurting you and you need to be in a relaxed position, so on your back.
