As for it being normal? I don't have a similar situation and I highly doubt many people do. But seriously, he might be reading into holding hands too much, he might think that any physical contact will lead to sexual activity. It might also be because he doesn't think he can express how much he enjoys holding hands with you the way he wants to, Tell him to use his words to express how much he likes it.
