Can you get genital herpes from having oral herpes?

Say I kissed someone with oral herpes. Now I have oral herpes. If I accidentally touched my cold sore before I touched my vagina, did I give myself genital herpes? The only reasons I think I might have it is I get a blood-filled blister (like a big zit without pus) on my labia minora every once in a while. AND I have a swollen lymph node in my armpit... :/ I don't know if it's just a coincidence. I haven't had sex with anyone who wasn't a virgin at the time, FYI.

  • I know this for sure because I had to talk to my doctor about it. I got fingered by a guy who had a cold sore and he had licked his fingers first so I freaked the f*** out.

Anyway this is what I was told:

Cold sores and genital herpes are slightly different viruses so while they CAN spread to one another (usually through oral sex) it's not quite as easy as it is to spread it to the same body part. That said, herpes is normally caused by skin to skin contact, in this instance, the sore did not touch your body part. Now, there is a VERY VERY VERRRRY slight possibility that you can spread herpes the way that you said, but the likelihood is so incredibly miniscule.

My advice? Let your doctor look at you and evaluate what you have. They don't normally like to do blood tests for herpes because most people do have traces of the virus in their system and even if it's completely dormant and you really don't ACTUALLY have herpes, it will show up in a blood test, almost like a false positive.

    I hope this helped!

    • So did you ever talk to your doc?

    • Not yet (my appointment isn't until the end of the month), but I'm not too worried about it. I did a bit more reading and my sore doesn't sound like herpes at all. But I'll still ask, obviously :) Thanks for your help.

    • Is the sore still there? They need to see it.

  • Yes you can

Herps can get in any wet place and your body. So you must be carefull by touching them with dirty hands, so use topic alcohol to clean up everything you are gonna get close to your body.

  • Yes and no I am going to assume

The cold sore is indeed herpes...but it is not the typical venereal disease that we all associate with cheap hookers. That is herpes simplex type 1. The really bad stuff is simplex type 2.

The recurring problem however does seem a little odd. I would consider seeing a doctor just to make sure or ask your gyno to take a look/talk about it.

One thing to consider is that one of the guys you had sex with wasn't a virgin and actually had herpes...but just told you this so he could get laid.

    • I've only had sex with one person and we were best friends since we were 5 :P He'd never even kissed a girl before me.

    • Well, google seems to think that you should see a doctor anyways to have it tested (when the sores are apparent anyways) If the herpes you contracted from the other person was type 2 (genital herpes they received from giving oral sex) then you might have type 2 herpes. I'm hoping its just type 1 though

  • If you receive oral sex from a person who experiences cold sores (even if they haven't seen one in a long time) this can transfer the virus to the genitals -- even if the person was not showing a cold sore at the time of contact. Cold sores and fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are spread by direct skin to skin contact. When a cold sore infection spreads to the genitals it is commonly a HSV-1 genital infection. Datingpoz.com
