It varies. One of the biggest factors in whether or not they "bare their essentials" is their sex. Generally women are bare or have a tight landing strip, while the men are more likely to be natural. The next factor is age. Younger people are more likely to shave (wax or whatever) than older.
It seems that in American nudist resorts (they are NOT colonies, they might run you out for calling them that :-)) people are less likely to shave than at nude beaches. I have noticed in some European countries that most of the women in nude resorts are shaved. In fact, it seems the girls start shaving as soon as they start growing pubic hair. Apparently shaving is the expected thing that is passed among nudist teens.
One interesting thing I have noticed this year is that there is a high percentage of women who are wearing bikini bottoms. In the past I knew of many women wearing bottoms when on their period, but unless half the women at the beach are all on their period at the same time, I think many women are choosing to attend nude beaches as a place to go topless. Also, some women and couples remain in swim attire but come to a nude beach to allow their kids to run around naked. Then there are whole families attending the nude beaches yet all are wearing swim suits. I don't know what the reasoning there is.

At all the resorts I have been to and most of the nude/clothing optional beaches, upwards of 90% of the women are completely bare and probably 70% of the men are also. Most of the rest are well groomed, either significantly trimmed or in the case of women a landing strip. Almost no one is natural. Could be a regional thing in Texas.

I'd guess that nudists are more inclined to keep it au naturale, because of their alternative beliefs toward body presentation and upkeep.
In Europe I guess its 50:50 shaved unshaved.
As a nudist family we all do however i was shaving from an early age of 14, and wife from 15.

Ok, I visit nude.beaches, but I can only speak about my town and surroundings. More than the half of the women are shaved, - you call it junk (LOL) - men are of course not shaved.
I've walked through one.
The people on nude beaches should be barred from ever taking their clothes off.
Many people shave. You have teens boys and girls then you have adults who do it. I have not seen anyone waxes it. In nudists activities that many of the females will shave so it far for the males. Girls and women can see their genitals but the hair keeps boys or men to see.
It's interesting, there seem to be a lot of nudist guys that do, although the bush seems to be coming back for women.

Everyone is a little different, I shave at the beaches.
Me and my wife visited a few nude beaches (France, Croatia and USA Miami) and I would say more than 90% (both sexes) are completely smooth (shaved, waxed and etc.) or very short trimmed. Me and my wife are bald permanently. To be smooth is much nicer and comfortable especially on nude beach, so I think better to shave.
I'm a nudist myself. Regarding hair removal, it depends on how lazy I am. I can shave everything, bush and armpits, then get lazy for a time, and completely forget to shave.
Shallow everyday people will care that I am not shaved, and I dont care about their opinion on this. It is my body, and not shaving doesn't hurt anyone.
P. S. Not shaving your bush, for women, on a nude beach, is like not being naked, yet being naked. And hair is part of the human body.
I think it's about 50/50. I shave it all of if I'm going to be spending a weekend or holiday at the beach or clothing optional resort. For me it feels better and I think looks better too.

I would think not. Peple wax because they think their partners want them to. If they are open enough to sit around naked among strangers, they'll confident enough not to shave
