Do you think girls "experiment" more with the same sex than guys?

I have a lot of female friends who like to mess around together. They assure me that it's just a college thing and that they're not lesbos or anything. I thought it was just the group I was hanging out with at first, but then I sent a poll around in one of my classes, just out of curiosity, and was stunned by the high number of girls who indicated that they'd done something sexual with another girl, but didn't consider themselves lesbian or bi. The number of guys was significantly lower. What do you guys think? Are girls more likely to experiment than guys? If so, why do you think that is?

  • No question.

The percentage of "bi-sexual" or "bi-curious" girls is pretty small compared to the total number of women, but the percentage of men who are bi is considerably smaller, something like 1/6th of the percentage of women.

The vast, vast majority of guys are either 100% straight or 100% gay, with very, very few falling somewhere in the middle.

With women, it's still mostly 100% straight or 100% gay, but the percentage of women who are somewhere in the middle, while still a small percentage, is much larger than the guys.

Also, the survey results that talk about this are probably not taking into consideration "college-age exploration". Many women go through a "bi-curious" phase somewhere between 16 and 24, but once over that phase, settle out to be 100% straight. The surveys don't seem to take that into account, as they enquire about CURRENT status vs. past experience. So the percentage of women who have had some bi experiences may be higher still. Very few men "experiment" or go through a "bi-curious" phase like (some) women do.

  • I think there are two things here. It may be girls are more likely to experiment, today this is more socially acceptable, 50 years ago it was not. I also think because of this social acceptance more girls are likely to admit they did it, even in an anonymous poll. I suspect the number of guys who have experimented is higher than admitted.

One interesting fact is in the USA the incidence of aids is five times as high among catholic priests as among the general male population.

    • Interesting. So do you think that it might be possible that guys are just less vocal about what they do than girls?

    • No f***ing way

    • There are of course all sorts of variations among people. My experience is on average guys are much less likely to be vocal about their sexual experiences than women. This is certainly true when it comes to experimenting with other guys. Also, for most guys the idea of a girl being bi or experimenting with other girls is very sexy. At the same time guys experimenting with other guys seems gross.

  • Along with the answers already presented, for a girl to mess around it is a lot softer than a guy I think. a guy would probably be expected to give or receive anal sex while with a girl it would be at the most extreme eating out a p****. I think that might have something to do with it.

  • It's more socially acceptable for women to experiment then it is for men, which I'm sure is a deterrent in some cases. It's an unfortunate double standard, yet guys don't seem to be up in arms about it :/

    • *Is up in arms about it*

    • :D! yay!

What Girls & Guys Said

  • Definitely, there isn't as much of a stigma about girls as guys. like your at a party and two girls pash the crowd will woo etc two guys pash and everyone calls them F*gs... nuff said

  • Yes, definitely. I feel like most of my female friends have at least made out with another girl at least once. Guy do it much less frequently. I think it's more stigmatized for guys to experiment with other guys than it is for girls with other girls.

  • Definitely girls experiment more, and for good reason; an experimental girl is called curious, an experimental guy is called gay.

    • That is spot on

    • Errrr wrong!

  • Being penetrated (orally or anally) seems more serious then licking each other.

    • That's true. Then again, there seem to be a lot of cucumbers kicking around my friend's apartment these days.

  • I think there is a bigger taboo in most places, and so guys are less likely to try it with each other even if they think about it, and then those that do are less likely to talk about it.

It even seems like most guys like the idea of two girls, but many girls don't want to see two guys.

    Oh, and cucumbers?!

    • Yup. I have a friend who is particularly fond of them (not for eating). Lol.

    • Now I can't get that mental image out of my head... ...and those long 'English' style could even be long enough for double-ended... ;)

    • She talked me into trying one once. I think it might have been that kind, because it was pretty long. Sorry, that was probably TMI, lol. xD
