Does the Alesse birth control pill cause or help cure acne?

I've been taking Alesse for about 2 weeks now and had been prescribed this to help with acne and also for birth control purposes. My derm said that Alesse is supposed to be good for curing acne and after doing a bit of googling, that is apparently one of the uses it is prescribed for. But after doing some research and reading some horror stories on the acne.org board (I know everyone reacts differently), I am scared to continue using it. Alesse apparently has lower estrogen and higher androgen doses than other birth control pills and since high androgen levels are usually one of the main causes of hormonal acne, I can't understand how putting more androgens into my body is supposed to help prevent pimples? Has anyone tried it here? Does it end up helping to clear your skin or does it actually made it worse?

  • I've never tried it, but I wouldn't let the internet horror stories scare you. When I was put on my current pill I went online and read all sorts of things about it. Lots of people said it killed their libido, and that really scared me haha. Turns out it raised my libido, cleared my skin, and gave me nice short periods. So give the pill a chance, and if it does start breaking you out then talk to your doctor about it. There are other pills out there that help with acne like ortho tri-cyclen, demulen, and desogen. Yaz and Yasmin too but I wouldn't recommend those... I'm on generic demulen by the way, it's called zovia :)

    • yeah I figured people only write something if it's really good or really bad lol. But it sort of made sense that it would cause acne since it has a higher androgen dosage than other pills. I just wanted to check because I'm only half way through so I figured I could just stop now without any major symptoms. I'm already taking antiobiotics which supposedly decrease BCP effectiveness so if it doesn't prevent pregnancy anyway, I figured I might as well not take them.

    • Have you ever tried any topicals for your acne? I had severe acne and so did my sister. I took accutane and she started tazorac and we both cleared up completely :)

    • hm I've always had mild acne so never took accutane and benoxyl peroxide never really worked for me. My jawline only really exploded last month (prior to BCP) out of the blue so I was just scared alesse would make it worse. I'll give it another while and if things get worse, I'll ask my derm for accutane. Thank you and per your profile pic, your skin is lovely now by the way ^^

  • Alesse birth control pills, which contain ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, both female-type hormones, can counter and eventually lower the levels of androgens in your body by replacing them with estrogen compounds, which are female hormones. Although Alesse hasn't received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval specifically for acne outbreaks, physicians are free to prescribe it to treat acne.
