Does anyone have experience with Plan B?

Plan b or ellecare emergency contraception? I take birth control pills and use condoms, but last night our condom broke. I feel that I may be OK but am considering one of these pills just in case. I've heard of people having bad side effects like awful cramps and vomiting... did you have that? How long did everything last?

  • Yeah I took it but I was not on any birth control. I took it within 3 hours of unprotected sex.

When I took it it was one of the last days of my period but I didn't want to take any chances, sperm can live several days and you never know when you can really conceive.

I took it with water on an empty stomach. I got the one step kind, it is only one pill and I think it is low estrogen so it is supposed to reduce the side effects. I hear that the two-step one may have worse side effects, but mine weren't awful.

I took it and an hour later I felt slightly nauseous and had a stomachache but nothing severe and I did not throw up. I kept pooping though, for a few hours after I took it, like every half hour for two or three hours, then I calmed down and my stomach felt better too.

Even though I took it on the day my period stopped, about four days after I took the pill I started bleeding like a period again. It was like a moderate-light period for about a day, more than just spotting but not as heavy as a normal flow. That lasted a few days and then I also had some spotting like a week or two after that.

Then my next period was a month late.

They say that it can make your next period early or late, but the bleeding several days afterward is not the period you are supposed to look for, it is just a side effect and probably the pill doing its job.

A few weeks after you take the pill you should get your normal period, not that bleeding that often comes a few days after. They say that if you don't get a normal period within a month of the pill you could be pregnant and should take a test. However, I recommend that most people probably should take a pregnancy test about a month after taking the pill, unless your full period has come again, because if you have an irregular cycle it can make your period very delayed even if you are not pregnant.

The pill screws with your hormones since it is one direct dose of very high hormones, and that's how it prevents pregnancy. It wasn't so bad to deal with, if I had to take it again I would, but I hear taking it too much can mess up your fertility, and definitely screw with your cycle.

  • I mean if you take birth control pills, you will probably be fine anyways. BUT if you are really paranoid and want to be extra extra safe, I'd say take the emergency contraceptive. If being sick is all you're worried about, I think the benefits outweigh the cost! A lot of girls here are saying it made them slightly sick but for me it had almost no effect at all. I had even been drinking the night before so I was a little hungover to begin with haha, and had an empty stomach (probably all bad things to have when taking any kind of medication), but I took it and didn't feel sick at all. I was going to take it either way but I was really worried that I'd be sick/get horrible cramps because most medications DO make me sick, but nope. Just a few days later had some light bleeding for about 4 days

    • Yea I take the pill every day but am definite'y not a "perfect" user and the time I take the pill sometimes changes. Not sure how much this increases my pregnancy risk

  • If you've been on the pill for a while and you're good about taking it on time, I probably wouldn't worry about it. I've never used condoms, I've been on the pill since I first started having sex 2 years ago. I trust the pill, its job is to prevent pregnancy even when used without condoms. But it's up to you and whatever will give you peace of mind, I know it's scary to be worrying if you're pregnant. Just coming from someone who uses the pill alone, I wouldn't be worried and wouldn't want to waste the money for Plan B, especially with unpleasant side effects.

    • yea I take the pill every day, but not always at the same time every day. I have a very erratic schedule and while lately I've been able to take them pretty accurately, at the beginning of the month there was a lot of variation in the timing. I just don't know if it's still likely I could get pregnant

    • In my experience it's still worked with a couple hours' variance each day, and even if you completely missed a day and took 2 the next day, doctors say you'll still be okay. But I understand being worried when you know the timing hasn't been exact. If you're usually just a couple hours off, I think you'd be fine, but any more than that, I might get worried. Again, it's up to you. Better to spend the money and not have to be so worried.

  • Sounds gross. I always wanted a child so I avoided condoms and she never used contraceptives.

One baby later and we realized that was it for our budget. I had a vasectomy.

  • I actually just used plan b a week ago. We had the same situation as you, we just panicked so we figured better get it and not risk it 'cause it was around the time I would have been ovulating had I not been on the pill and... Well there's always that chance.

Only side effects I got were (and I'm going to be straight forward and honest so I'm sorry for any explicits) minor cramps the next day for about two or three hours, lack of hunger, a bit of a tummy ache (really negligible, though), and diarrhea. Other than that I'm great. It all depends on you. I find that because my body's so accustomed to my birth control pills it didn't really react to the plan b pill.

  • I've used the Plan B various times and have never had much of a reaction. Some cramping and upset stomach, but no vomiting. Headache around the same time so I don't know if that was caused from the pill or from something else. In any case the plan B has been better than being preggie when I didn't want to be
