Everything About Periods

I've seen a lot of questions from guys on the subject of periods, and to prevent writing the same thing every time I see the question I'm just going to write this once and link to it each time. It should be clarified that by the title I'm talking about "everything I know about periods."

Everything About Periods

What is it?

A woman's period is the process in which every month (roughly) she sheds a spongy, viscous lining on her uterine wall and an egg if it has not been fertilized.

What are cramps?

Cramps help in the breaking down of the uterine lining. If a woman has a particularly thick lining, her uterus is tilted, or her cervix is small it can be particularly painful. The "pill" helps ease this pain by thinning the lining.

What about PMS?

PMS occurs because of a whole lot of hormonal changes during this time, interestingly though, it's actually mostly the drop in all hormones. Less progesterone etc

How long?

It usually occurs every 25-35 days and typically lasts 3-7 days, but can last longer for some women.

How much blood is lost?

Typically between 4-12 teaspoons of blood AND other materials.

Why does this happen?

This is actually an interesting and slightly more complex question. Periods, or external menstruation is very rare within the animal community with mostly only other primates demonstrating this phenomena. Researchers have come to an interesting conclusion that this occurs in species in which the mother is responsible for controlling whether or not she gets pregnant. Basically the fertilized egg can only attach IF she has this spongy zygote friendly lining. This ability is called "spontaneous decidualisation." Two hypotheses are that 1.) self defense in these species the fetus is quite aggressive and will burrow all the way into the blood stream if allowed and thus this process came about to defend the mother. 2.) In order to expel bad embryos.

Everything About Periods

I think it is important to add (although not really noted in the article I read) my observation that the species that demonstrate this phenomena all are ones in which have a heavy cost involved in child-rearing. Pregnancy and birth for these species are incredibly taxing and can frequently result in physical harm to the mother and/or the fetus. Additionally, after birth the mother has to expend a lot of resources on nurturing these young. Thus it is imperative that they ensure only the "best" embryos get implanted.

Cool/ Random stuff?

These are things that I'm also aware of, but don't as frequently notice as questions.

1.) Many women describe increased sexual desire during this time.

2.) Many women's breast appear to engorge during this time.

3.) A study has shown that many men find a woman's "moan" more attractive during this time.

PS I'm aware of the hilarity of a man writing about this, but whatever.

    • "PS I'm aware of the hilarity of a man writing about this, but whatever."

    • I know I read that

    • It is, but it's shocking how few women even know what's going on.

  • Through my life had 2wives 4 daughters to the first second one came with 3daughters. So you can imagine periods were the norm. We had cupboard too of the stairs with just about. every type style of sanitary towel , it was always on the shopping list. There was two things that amazed me is that there periods were very close to eachother also how each one the period affected it ranger from feeling a little uncomfortable to screaming pain. But it was just normal in our life at home !!!

    • Holy hell man! You had seven daughters in total? 😰

    • Actually I had a daughter to a French lass but sadly I didn't know she was until her death. and her mother's in a accident !!!

  • Great take!

I don't think it should be awkward for us to discuss about this.

    • Nah, they're interesting.

    • I don't think it should necessary to discuss about it. It's just blood women learn to deal with at the age 12 and men do not need to give a shit about.

    • @Giacomanzo there are a lot of things I don't NEED to give a shit about that I still have knowledge about and find interesting.

  • Sex drive increase premenstrual time and postmenstrual time.
    Breast engorged

  • More you know

  • Why is a man writing about periods?

    • I've seen a lot of questions from guys on the subject of periods, and to prevent writing the same thing every time I see the question I'm just going to write this once and link to it each time.

    • Once again, why is A MAN writing about periods? First at all, I've never seen anyone asking anything about it. Second, even if that was the case, people keep making the same questions and the same takes on this website about everything, so trust me, if people asked about periods they would have kept doing it. Luckily they don't, so they won't ask about it in the future either.

    • "I've seen a lot of questions from guys on the subject of periods, and to prevent writing the same thing every time I see the question I'm just going to write this once and link to it each time" I do this with a lot of the common questions asked in which I have a decent knowledge of the subject.

  • Is it true that orgasms can shorten the duration?

    • I'm not aware, but most women can cum fairly quickly.

    • I mean the duration of their periods

    • Ah, no idea. Any particular reason you ask?

  • and i didn't have it for 1 year

  • Nice one
So women loose around 4 to 12 spoons of blood in a day or totally in once cycle of period of 5 days?

    • Over the whole period I believe.

  • Im always understanding with my girlfriends pain in these difficult days. But last time, she flipped at me from nowhere and almost ended our relationship, I was at work and my phone was shut off due to an emergency issue at the reserve, when I turned it on, she had sent me over a dozen messages and called me a couple of times. When I apologized and explained myself she said I needed to learn a lesson, so she ignored me for a day, on the other day she almost ended things, if I wasn't so patient I would have ended it myself. She said "Maybe we should break up" I said "I won't force you to stay with me or anything, but you should think carefully about all this". I left her alone for a couple of hours untill she came back and apologized, we talked about it and now we're cool.

  • you are a brave and good soul. It's not hilarious at all. Good for you that you care enough to write about women.

  • 4-12 teaspoons? I feel like I am losing 4-12 big ladles.

    • XD In order to test this they weighed pads that women were using.

    • It can seem like a lot of blood but is usually not as much as it seems, though of course you might have a particularly heavy flow. If you use a menstrual cup, you will be able to see how much blood you're actually losing.

    • @samhradh_leannan I know I have a heavy flow. I was jokingly telling this.

  • Good one! :)
