Girls: How do I know if I have a yeast infection ? And how do you treat it ? Do over the counter products work ? I don't want to go to the doctor I've never had one before and I'm also a virgin so I'm pretty sure it's not anything else

  • if your discharge is really thick (looks kind of like ricotta cheese), if you're experiencing itching anywhere in the area, and if you get a strong not-so-normal scent you probably have a yeast infection. you can just buy monistat to treat it. I hear a lot of people HATE the one day treatment, doctors almost always suggest the 4-7 day treatments (I think its like $10-15). if you have intense itching you can buy the vagisil anti itch stuff you see in commercials(this is like $6).

if you have a foul odor with strong colored discharge you probably just have an overgrowth of bacteria (either from washing yourself too much or with the wrong soap or from a poor diet), which can only be treated by a doctor.

neither of these is because you're dirty or sleep around lol, these are natural imbalances. everyone gets one at some point.

    • I was wondering about all that also because I'm really clean, I shower twice a day most of the time and never even had sex so I didn't understand why I would have one. Thanks for clarifying

    • make sure not to wash it too much because that can kill all of your good bacteria, which allows for bad bacteria to grow! that can cause a yeast infection. use a bunch of warm water and a little bit of soap.

    • thanks for ba!

  • Go to the doctor. Vaginal flora balance is delicate so if you don't have a yeast infection and you use over the counter products you can give yourself BV. On the flip side you may think it's a Bv, but it may be yeast. So, just go to the doctor to be sure. Also, some STDs produce a discharge too which is why is so important for you to go to the doctor. Did I mention you should go to the doctor? Got it yet?

  • What are your symptoms? Because it can be a UTI instead. But yes, over the counter drugs can help you.

    • itchying and also a little pain, more like discomfort on the inside. Do you think it would it hurt to treat myself even if I didn't have one ?

    • Do you feel like you have to pee constantly? Depending on what you get, no it probably wouldn't hurt you if you used the medication/treatment especially since you have abnormal symptoms.

    • yes but I drink a lot so that's really nothing new. Ok thanks I may just try a over the counter until I can get to my doctor thanks

  • Google does wonders. You should learn how to use it.

    • Skipping questions you have no answer to and that are addressed to "girls" also does wonders. I wanted answers from real girls, not google

    • 'Cause the girls from GAG come up and knock on your door, right? They're just people behind a screen. If I answered anonymously and my profile suggested that I was a girl you wouldn't have a problem because I'm a "real" girl? lol. Google could have told you EXACTLY what any girl here will tell you from a different, perhaps more ignorant, point-of-view.

    • I forgot to mention that I answered a question addressed to girls because I don't let hapless losers try to moderate which questions I answer when they don't have the power to do so.

  • 7 day treatments are most effective

  • I'm amazed at how many medical doctors use this website. Who freakin' knew? I'll never need to see my GP or GYN again. Instead I'll just come here. LMAO! It is so stupid to take anyones advise on here for medical issues.

    • It's just a yeast infection, not cancer. My doctor has a 3 month wait we're I'm from so sorry if I would like an over the counter treatment instead of waiting for that long.

    • YOu have a couple of other options. If you're a university student, go to university health services which is almost free for students. OR talk to the pharmacist who will know about this stuff too. There are just too many ill-informed people on here, and only a few well informed ones.
