Girls: Prom is coming up and so is my period, how to deal with that?

Yeah according to the period tracker on my iPod my prom night will be on the third day of my period. I got on google and the answer everyone is giving is tampons and panty liners. I hate tampons, but I'd hate wearing a pad with a dress even more. The issue is I don't know how to really use tampons...I've worn them before (for 5 days for swimming in gym), but it was a terrible experience for me and haven't done it since (3 yrs). I feel like it might not be as bad this time around, because I have the proper stuff (too big last time). Can any one give me a mini guide or some tips on using tampons?

  • Yes, sometimes tampons can take several tries to get used to. It also helps if you are more relaxed. I rarely use tampons, as I find them to be uncomfortable putting in and taking out. But on the ocasion I use them.

Sometimes using a tiny bit up lube can also help get them in the proper place and make the experience more comfortable. Also using smaller tampons as you have said.

A tampon might be a good option for you during prom. They are smaller and easier to store in a small purse or clutch.

I would definitely try different kinds of tampons the days before prom to find the ones that are working best for you. Sometimes you can get small packs of them at the dollar store or even drug store to try. Once you find ones that you like, use that and store a couple extra in your clutch.

Best thing to do is to realize that it might take a few tries. At first using a tampon can feel weird, but if you relax and keep trying you will get it in and it will be fine :) A lot of girls hate using tampons, I am one of them. But it's something a lot of girls have had to deal with.

I would also wear a light panty liner just in case there is leaking (you never know). But that way you aren't wearing a huge pad with your dress.

I suggest one with an applicator, like kotex pearl. They aren't very thick, and the applicator makes it easy to use. All you do is take the tampon out of the packaging, adjust it so the string is hanging down, find your vaginal opening, start putting the tampon tip in there, and once your fingers are touching the entrance of your vagina you start pushing the plastic tube at the bottom to release the tampon. Then you throw away the plastic applicator.

    • My main issue was not being able to relax >< did not help the process at all

  • Make sure you know where the opening of your vagina is, line the applicator up, and push it in. When the thicker tube is all the way in, push on the thinner one to release the tampon. Make sure it is far in enough, past the ridge in your vagina, so that it will stay in and you won't feel it too much. Use a liner so you don't have to worry about leaks. Voila! Also, read the instructions that come with them.

  • Splurge just a bit and get a nice smooth plastic one. I recommend the You Kotex ones because they are fairly small and barely noticeable. It took me a few years to where I felt comfortable wearing them but it turned out I was trying the cheap cardboard ones from the restroom and they are bad to begin with!

  • Try menstrual cups. My girlfriend says they work well.

  • How did you make out? Hopefully it waited until after prom.

    • My period didn't come until after, I was so happy *.*

  • Use Plastic applicators and smallest ones for your flow..I hope that helps...scented tampons might help

  • Just use the paper it comes with. Push it in until your fingers touch your body then push in the bottom of the applicator and pull it out. Tuck the string in and you're good to go. Insert and take out at a 45 degree angle though! and don't pull it out before its full or it'll hurt like a bitch. Use a panty liner and yeah. That's it.
