When my nails were grown out I don't think I had much of an issue with it. The only thing to really watch is that your nails are clean and there's nothing under them. They shouldn't be uneven or cracked, and a rounded shape is better than square with points. I had to be a little more careful when initially inserting a finger (because that's when the nail can hurt), but once it's in and you feel with the pad of your finger not the nail, it should be fine. I never bought nail caps or used acrylics. Then I started playing piano again though, and so they're cut short now.

Suggest you cut short the nails on your working fingers and use artificials. Even if caps existed, they would feel wrong and your fingertips would lack the sensitivity they need.
