I prefer guys with a hairless chest. A little bit is okay. Too much and it's a turn off. I don't want a hairy beast lol. Hair on a guys legs, hairs, face is fine by me.
For girls, I prefer not to have hair anywhere but on my head. It's more feminine and I feel cleaner that way.
I don't think it has anything to do with the media. Because even if the media thought it'd be cool to glamorize hairy bodies I doubt it be taken seriously. It has to do with femininity and masculinity. I mean would you really think a chick with hairy armpits were sexy? Men have a bit more flexibility, but as women we really don't. (but I mean if a girl wants to me hairy she can...but I doubt the majority of the American male population would be turn on)
The media / society are a solid reason - as women and shaving is still pretty young as far as personal hygiene / upkeep, compared to other things like brushes and make - up.
I think it probably has something to do with the fact that hair has been associated more predominantly with males, and it's more feminine to have less hair compared to the fuzzy guys. Of course society grabbed onto that aspect and glamorized it as a whole - the media just fed off of this idea to make some cash off of hairy women lol.

My boyfriend's explanation is that hairless skin is softer and smoother, and therefore more appealing. He has me shave everything-- my arms, my knuckles and toes, the little hairs near my bellybutton (most girls have that, right?)...literally everything.

@Maria: You are really cute...and...I do not know about raconteur but..I know that I like having no hair there because..it makes it appear bigger (I am already relatively big) but..the "no hair" thing is good when it comes to how big it appears...
For guys? I have no idea, I think that guys with a bit of hair are hot, but not if they're monkeys lol
For girls? Well hair is most often seen as masculine and plus skin feels softer and smoother :) but my main reason is that I don't wanna look like a guy lol
i use to think that hairless was hot.. now my boyfriend is well.. yeah hairy chest and I have never been more turned on by a body. but as you said it truly is the media.. you have to learn what you like, not hat others want you to like. so you have to be open minded.
