because they are with other guys and they just have to do it...believe me my dad is on the fire department and they do that crap...like joking around and stuff all the time...and he only does it when he's at the fire department...i guess its the only way they know how to conversate with each other...and the reason why you don't see men in suits do it...is because they have a reason not too..they could be someones lawyer..or be selling you something...and I wouldn't won't a lawyers settling my case on sexual harassment or buy something from someone who could sexually harass me...so I hope this answers your question some...
I own a construction company and our crews do not act like that. I do not think they behave any more differently, than they would in a group at the bar or a sporting event. Contractors do not have to put on aires about being proper, as do men in suits who work in a professional environment. What I have personally experienced is that the one's in suits are more disrespectful towards women, than contractors.
But they do it when no ones looking, and get away with it, you're their boss so of course you wouldn't know lol
Part of it has to do with the level of testosterone in their system. Physical labor increases the production of testosterone, which increases a man's sex drive and general "manliness."
Another part of it may have to do with the company he keeps -- namely, other construction workers. When you spend a lot of time around the same type of people, it becomes easy to adapt to their behaviours, be it as a result of observation, conversation, or deliberate practice. Most of the time, these guys are being guys and they don't call each other on it when one of them acts rude or, well, like a man.
it's the culture of their coworkers.
Just like girls show their boobs at mardis gras because all the girls around them are doing it. so do construction workers act boorish because all the construction workers around them are doing it.
