How do I know if I am pregnant?

So I had unprotected sex of course. Last week Sunday morning now it has been a week since its Monday. I have been nauseous all day and my boobs are sore, also I took a test because I thought you had to wait 7 days, the test came out negative... I don't know I have been feeling real sick and I no its not the flu. Did I take the test to early? Or something else.. Oh and I am due to get my period in 5 days according to my period tracker on my phone.

  • 1) Have you ever heard of the "placebo" effect?

A common example is that people get cured from diseases when they are injected with pure water and are told that it is a "miracle medicine". Sometimes, we believe that things happen, and therefore our brains react accordingly.

You read or heard or somehow learned that your breasts should feel sore and you should be nauseous if you are pregnant. Therefore your body might be generating these false symptoms because you think you might be pregnant.

However, an equally sound argument is that you are actually pregnant. We can't know which one the case is, so I will just ignore that part of the post.

    2) A pregnancy test that results in a negative is a good sign, and you probably shouldn't worry after that. Though, those tests are not 100% accurate. There always is a margin of error. Therefore, if you are still stressed, go take another test.

    3) If you are due to get your period in 5 days according to a schedule, well, that might be the reason of the physical symptoms, actually. But anyways, give it a couple extra days, because lots of things can alter your menstruation cycle, including stress (and I am sure you are stressed), and if your period is more than a week late, it might not really be a good sign.

    4) For the next time, not only make sure that you are using condoms / birth control pills/ etc. , but you also have what's called a Plan B pill, which makes you "not become pregnant" if taken in the first 24 hours after the intercourse. (Though don't forget that even these pills aren't 100% effective).

Now you need to be patient, and wait until you get your period. Hope for the best, and prepare for the worst. If you are old and mature enough to have sex, you should be old and mature enough to consult your family or your gynecologist in the case of an unwanted pregnancy and possibly an abortion.

  • Your period is probably going to start. Your chest usually swells and gets sore around that time, either before, during, and/or after.

Additionally stress and hormones can play a role in this. The anxiety of thinking that you're pregnant can be stressful on your body and make you feel sick, and even delay your period.

I wouldn't start worrying unless your period starts to be really, really late - like, more than a month late. As of right now it's hard to tell, but you probably are not pregnant.

Couldn't hurt to start using some sort of contraceptive, also. Be mature about this, please.

  • Don't stress out too much. The stress could be what's making you sick, and when people are stressed their muscles and bodies become sore from tension. Also when that time of the month rolls around the breasts do tend to become swollen, sensitive and sore. Since you took a test and it was negative, don't worry until you've missed your period completely by about 5 days. After the 5 days take another home test. If the test is positive make an appointment to see a doctor. Otherwise you shouldn't worry too much about it right now, you'll just make yourself more sick.

  • Last week? you would not have any symptoms at all. Most girls think they're pregnant when they get period symptoms. Especially if you're period is in 5 days... and the test was negative. You're probably fine. If you don't get your period that's when you worry.
