Good ol' saliva does the trick just fine if he prefers his hjs lubed up. Like anon dude says, take cues from what works for him when he jacks off, like if he usually does it dry but prefers a little slickness, even mimic his technique a little. You can get a guy hard without lube using just your hand, by lightly grabbing his penis as of it were a stress ball.
