I took the morning after pill, but my period is late.

Ok. So I had unprotected sex 3 times on Christmas (24 late night - 25 early morning). He didn't come inside me as far as I know, but since I get easily anxious and I heard stories about getting pregnant from pre-cum I decide to take the pill. I took it on 25 afternoon(less than 24 hours) but then I drank wine and beer. I also smoked. I know that emotional stability and anxiety can alter your cycle. Also the change of environment. I changed cities, and I'm in a depressed mode. Also I'm very anxious these last weeks. I think my period usually comes around 7. Now it's 15 and still no sign of my period. I used EllaOne. I read the instructions before taking the pill. There said nothing about alcohol and smoking. I also searched online and it seems that smoking and consuming alcohol don't have an known impact on the pill.

  • Try not to worry about it, the pills aren't 100% effective of course although they are effective to the point where the chances of getting pregnant should be almost negligible. It's not uncommon of course for girls/women to miss their periods, and sometimes it can be for substantial period of time. Different things of course can affect your cycle like stress and so on, but medication and I've heard birth control can also affect it... Mainly because the release of the egg relies on chemical signals, and the pills simulate these to fool it into thinking an egg has been released... flip other variations of the pill can fool your body into thinking that you aren't at the stage in your cycle to have your period.

  • I've had two girlfriends who needed to use it and it work both times. I went on the planned parenthood website and this is what I found

sounds like if used within 72 hours its 89% effective. It sounds like the sooner you take it (in your case less within 24 hrs) the more effective it is and it's effectiveness drops the longer you wait however you can take it up to 120hrs after sex. They recommend if you don't have your period within three weeks after taking the pill you should get a pregnancy test... so for now I would worry, sometimes periods are later than normal and it could have nothing to do with the emergency contraception

  • stress and anxiety can be the biggest factor in having a late or missed period. and that includes moving to a new city... that can totally mess up your cycle. I would either wait a few more days or if you're really concerned than do a home pregnancy test. its better to find out right away than to ponder about it and put yourself through more stress ok? take care and good luck sweetie.

    • I just took a home pregnancy test, and it came out negative

    • than you're OK. it just sounds like a combination of things that affected your cycle. it happens to the best of us. once you get settled back into the routine of life things will be back to normal. take care :o)
