Is a condom enough to prevent pregnancy?

I don't want to go on birth control for various reasons, but I've read dozens of women using birth control and condoms at the same time to prevent pregnancy. Is a condom enough? What about condom combined with the pull-out method?

  • The only 100% effective birth control rate is abstinence, so understand that by having sex you're taking at least some tiny risk of getting pregnant.

Condoms, when used correctly, have about a 98% effectiveness rate at preventing pregnancy. That means that, out of every act of sexual intercourse in which a condom is the only form of birth control, 2% will result in pregnancy. This compares with about a 99% effectiveness for various forms of hormonal birth control (the pill, various shots/implants, etc.), and a nearly 100% effectiveness rate for IUDs.

The important thing to remember is that the 98% effectiveness rate is when condoms are used correctly. In practice, condoms are about 85% effective. This is because a lot of people don't use them correctly. Be sure that you and your partner know how to do that.

Pulling out while still wearing the condom will likely make them more effective (provided you've put them on correctly and haven't done anything else that would reduce their effectiveness). One of the most common mistakes guys make is staying in the vagina too long after ejaculation, allowing the erection to go down so that the condom can either slip off or let some of the semen leak out. Pulling out while still wearing the condom will eliminate that possibility, provided that he grabs the base of it as he pulls out of you, otherwise, the condom could slip off. Pulling out will also eliminate any possibility of him ejaculating inside you if the condom has somehow broken.

All that being said, lots of people (myself included) use condoms on their own without pulling out and have never had any issues.

  • The pull out method is bullshit. I find it crazy people on here even talk about it. That's a method from the 18th century. Every doctor will tell you with a very serious face DO NOT DO IT. The pull out method is NOT a variety of safe sex. It DOES NOT protect you from a pregnancy.

Having cleared this hopefully, I can assure you that condoms are very, very safe. This thing of combining condoms with birth control is mostly an American thing and I've always thought it's rather ridiculous. If you don't behave like a complete idiot, using a condom is just fine. They're really not hard to use.

    • Basically this^^^

    • Not that I'm advocating for withdrawal as a birth control strategy, but it's almost as effective as condoms when done correctly (96% to 98%). The problem is that it's difficult to do correctly, especially with younger guys.

    • @3gmoney3 is right. If you're a withdrawal rockstar, it's actually quite effective.

  • Thres no really such thing as "enough" however any method of birth control there's always a chance of pregnancy! You are making an effort though to protect yourself and that's what is important

  • If you use a condom correctly, the percentage of protection it offers is comparable to using birth control. Pairing the condom use with pulling out will of course make you even safer.

  • Yes it is. I've only been using a condom for years and I've never been preg lol
No pull out method with condoms either. Just condoms and him cumming while inside me

  • Yes I relied on condoms for a couple years after I became sexually active.
