Is there such a thing as being big boned?

Is saying a person is big boned a polite way of saying they are fat? (I am being serious here) our bones are not big :P

  • 1.Long bones:

Long bones have greater length than width and consist of a shaft and a variable number of endings (extremities).

They are usually somewhat curved for strength.

Examples include femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, ulna and radius.

    2.Short bones:

Short bones are roughly cube-shaped and have approximately equal length and width.

Examples include ankle and wrist bones.

    3.Flat bones:

Flat bones have a thin shape/structure and provide considerable mechanical protection and extensive surfaces for muscle attachments.

Examples include cranial bones (protecting the brain), the sternum and ribs (protecting the organs in the thorax), and the scapulae (shoulder blades).

    4.Irregular bones:

Irregular bones have complicated shapes and so cannot be classified into any of the above (shape-based) categories. Their shapes are due to the functions they fulfill within the body e.g. providing major mechanical support for the body yet also protecting the spinal cord (in the case of the vertebrae).

Examples include the vertebrae and some facial bones.

    5.Sesamoid bones:

Sesamoid bones develop in some tendons in locations where there is considerable friction, tension, and physical stress. They may therefore form in the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet, however their presence and quantity varies considerably from person to person.

Examples common to everyone include the patellae (kneecaps).

    6.Sutural bones:

Sutural bones are classified by their location rather than by their shape. They are very small bones located within the sutural joints between the cranial bones. The number of sutural bones varies considerably from person to person, therefore these are un-named bones.

    • Wow you know your A&P

I see you even included the patella.. Can you have nobby patellas?

    • hahahaha

    • I wasn't asking for the different type of bones lol, just wondering if big boned is a polite way to say someone is fat.

  • Well no one is big boned, because no one has ever seen a fat skeleton.

But I do think big boned is a thing, but not in the sense that the bones are fat, just that the structure of the person makes them look bigger than they are. I always use Khloe Kardashian as an example here, she's not fat or over weight (or at least last time I saw her) but she's big. She has a big structure that makes her look a big fat when she isn't.

  • no you'd just literally have a bigger frame. Wider shoulders possibly carry more muscle/taller think Amazon women and then some are are petite framed, shorter just tiny in general

nothing to do with weight it is possible to be bigger boned though that's usually a nice way to say someone is thick.

  • All people are unique in their musculoskeletal structure. People definitely have different sized bones. You can see from measuring around the wrist and at the elbow joint. A large boned person can be very fit with low body fat and have an overall slenderish appearance, or they can be fat. A slender boned person can also be fat.

Now that the scientific stuff has been recognized we can address what you are actually asking :) That IS a polite way that people describe overweight individuals sometimes when they are trying to make them seem favorable. Ex: In the movie Friday, Nia Long described her friend to Smoky as being big boned, and the girl got out of her car looking like a water buffalo.

Being overweight does not make your bones grow.

    • Apparently being overweight does make your bones grow: link

  • My sister has really thick, heavy bones and she isn't fat. She looks pretty frail, but she hits like a sledgehammer. A lot of guys figured that out the hard way when she went through middle school.

I don't hear the "you're just big-boned" comment being tossed around so much these days.

  • My cat is big boned, well that's what he tells me anyway.

  • endomorphic body type?

  • "I'm big boned"

No, you have regular bones with big ass meat wrapped around them.

  • There are a lot of large boned people both men and women

  • Not everyone is a size 2. A size 12 or 14 girl may not be fat she's just bigger in stature, hence big boned.

    • This is true!
