Doesn't matter to me. I kind of like teasing him along and feeling him grow in my mouth. My dude is probably soft about 1/2 to 2/3 of the time when I first start a bj. It doesn't really matter one way or the other.

Honestly, sucking on a soft d*ck is almost easier. You can get more of him in your mouth that way.
