I offered to buy some for him, but is it normal for guys to be embarrased about that sort of thing? He's afraid people are going to judge him, is he right?

Men pride themselves on being able to attract and have sex with many women. In a group of guys, we may often tell each other of all the hot chicks we've screwed. Buying condoms reinforces the fact that you're out there having sex, instead of staying at home on a Friday night watching anime porn with a bag of Cheetos and a squeeze bottle of lotion.

Ask him what exactly he's afraid of being judged about.
Is he afraid people will think he's having sex? Oh my... what a terrible thing in this day and age for a 20 year old man (or perhaps boy) to have sex.

Yes, it's normal. He may feel like cashiers are looking at him thinking "Who's THIS guy going to have sex with?" or some other unlikely scenario. Once he does it the first time, it will get easier.

Seriously how old is he? Who cares what anyone thinks if he wants to have sex he better get it together go in the store buy the condoms and get out of there. Can you imagine how many people buy condoms and lube from the drug store or wherever? Even if they were free at the clinic someone will have to give them to you or someone will see him getting them. Those people are probably thinking about getting off the clock to go home they are not worried about what people are buying.

Honestly, nobody really cares. The cashiers don't even care that much since they work in the pharmacy and see all kinds of embarrassing purchases. It's okay to be a bit embarrassed but there's no reason to be.

Hell no! It was awkward for me the first time, so I bought something else with it as well as going to a walmart at like 12 midnight haha but after the first time, it was fine. If he's a man, he'll man up to the challenge and just go fucking buy them. Do you know how many people buy condoms? It's not like the cashier is going to say, "what the fuck" its obvious their intent for use, but no one gives a fuck honestly. Just go with confidence.
