One of three reasons:
1. He was having a really good dream that caused him to act it out. Very rare but can happen.
2. He suffers from sexsomnia (sort of like sleep walking). It's a real condition.
3. He has a sleep fetish (He likes to have sex with a sleeping woman).
The first one you don't have to worry about. My ex used to talk in her sleep and kick me if she was having a nightmare. The brain is supposed to paralyze you when you sleep, but sometimes it doesn't do it properly.
The second one you may want to keep an eye on. If he is having sleep sex, you can tell pretty easily. Sexsomniacs have some of the same involuntary signs of a sleep walker, but in this case it's sexual acts. This one you may need to consider if it happens a lot, like every few days, or several times a month.
3. If he has a sleep fetish, ask him if he does in a nice way. If he says, no, then look at #1 or #2 above. If he says yes and it bothers you, seek counseling (good luck getting him to do that with you). If it doesn't bother you, then try to participate. The best thing a woman can do is to compromise on a man's fantasy or fetish instead of flat our turning him down because you think its weird. As long as it causes no bodily harm and its something that doesn't cross your moral boundaries. If he does have a sleep fetish, then count yourself lucky. It could be worse.
Different guys are turned on by different things. maybe he has a sleeping girl fetish. That would likely come from the desire that every guy has to be able to mess around with a girl and not worry about his performance. but either way its nothing really worth worrying about. he likes you and your body so if you aren't particularly against it I would let him keep dry humping you in the future. if I were you I would even try dry humping him, see what he does. because I know if my girl did that to me I can't say I would be upset
He could have just woken me up for real sex though lol! I would prefer that over dry humpind while I'm sleeping.

I don't think you need to be freaked out, it's not like he really did anything. If you're not happy with it ask him not to do it in future. I can imagine that would be very hard for him though.
He didn't want to wake you up, maybe he didn't even want sex.
