No it is not necessary. Basically in p*rn it is done for effect and as a lube because it is understandable in many of the cases the girl is not actually turned on, therefore her vagina will be somewhat dry when he goes in. Keeping the penis wet with spit in these cases helps with getting it easier without hurting the girl.
