The Pros, Cons and Some Notable Facts About Male Circumcision

The pros, cons and some notable facts about male Circumcision.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin covering the penis glans.

Here's a map showing prevalence of circumcision by countries

The Pros, Cons and Some Notable Facts About Male Circumcision

Pros

1. Decreased risk of urinary tract infections

Circumcision reduces the risk of developing UTI in the first year of life by a factor of 12, and the absolute risk of a genitally intact boy developing UTI was approximately 1 in 100.

However according to critics, UTI can be easily prevented by personal hygiene and can be cured easily by antibiotics.

2. Decreased risk of sexually transmitted disease.

The risk of STD was three times less with circumcision.

Critics say that while the risk decreases for some, it increases for other STDs.

3. Decreased risk of penile cancer

While advocates believe that circumcision can significantly lower the risk, there is not enough hard evidence to support the argument.

Cons

1. Painful and risky

While anesthesia can be administered during the procedure, the pain after the surgery is still a lot.

For infants, anesthesia is not safe and therefore circumcision causes intense pain often lead to shock and trauma.

There can be 1-40% chance of complications, varying by patients.

2. Removing foreskin exposes the penis glans to rupture

The Pros, Cons and Some Notable Facts About Male Circumcision

While your dick is safe in your pants, still who knows........its not 100% safe.

3. Sexual and Psychological effects

Advocates and critics have very conflicting views. While advocates say that women prefer a circumcised penis, the critics say otherwise.

Circumcision and Religion

Islam

Khitan, is very important in islam and is practiced nearly universally by Muslim males.

Islam bases its practice of circumcision on the Genesis 17 narrative, the same Biblical chapter referred to by Jews. The procedure however is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran.

For Muslims, circumcision is also a matter of cleanliness, purification and control over oneself.

Judaism

The Pros, Cons and Some Notable Facts About Male Circumcision

Circumcision is very important to most branches of Judaism, with over 90% of adherents having the procedure performed as a religious obligation.

The basis for its observance is found in the Torah of the Hebrew Bible, in Genesis chapter 17, in which a covenant of circumcision is made with Abraham and his descendants. Jewish circumcision is part of the brit milah ritual, performed by a specialist ritual circumciser on the eighth day since birth.

Christianity

Circumcision is neither required nor forbidden in Christianity.

The Catholic church maintains a neutral position on the subject.

Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist Views

While Hinduism and related religions say nothing about circumcision, it remains a social taboo.

Any kind of modification, even piercings in the genitals is socially unacceptable.

Case of South Korea

Circumcision itself was almost unknown in South Korea before before the US trusteeship, 1945-48, and the heavy US involvement in the Korean War; 1950-53. Older men report not having heard of it before then. It was adopted because of US cultural influence.

Surprised? It is surprising.

Africa and Australia

Circumcision is considered a step towards manhood in some cultures of Africa and Australia.

Enough written!

To conclude

There are no overwhelming health-related reasons for circumcision to be routinely performed on newborn males. Therefore, it is a decision best left to parents.

What Girls & Guys Said

  • I don't give a shit about circumcision. I only care when its done to babies at birth, let them do it when they are older if they want to be circumcised.

  • Nice take it was interesting.

  • Why is this even a thing? It sounds terrible.

  • I'm circumcised and still get very angry when I think about it. The head of my penis is frequently uncomfortable in my clothes, no matter what I wear. When I was a young boy, I used to constantly move my penis around to try making it less uncomfortable. Since then, some nerves have apparently deadened, or skin that should be protected--not constantly exposed--has calloused over to an extent. So, it's not as bad now, but it still sucks.

This article is not particularly accurate. Circumcising babies can actually cause a UTI, due to exposing the glans when it should be protected. Even if STD and UTI rates were improved by circumcision, that would not be a legitimate basis for the practice to be carried out on people who cannot give consent.

As far as religion being used as a reason to circumcise, that's ridiculous too. No baby has a religion. They may have religious parents, but they obviously have no position on the matter. If religion can be used to justify removing part of a baby's penis, then it can be used to justify anything. Religion IS used to justify all sorts of rotten things; circumcision is just one of them.

For a female to complain about the appearance of uncircumcised penises is an incredibly senseless and selfish thing. You've got issues if you can't understand that it's just a matter of what you're used to. Even if you can't get past it, your preference should have no bearing on the permanent removal of healthy, normal tissue from an infant that cannot consent to its excruciatingly painful removal.

So many people scream "MY BODY, MY CHOICE!" when it comes to a female's body with a baby growing inside. But the "my body, my choice" philosophy is not extended to the baby if it is born a boy, and the mother decides that part of his penis just has to go.

Non-therapeutic circumcision should be outlawed, and there isn't a single legitimate opposing view to that statement. Not "Society has been circumcising babies for eons", not "My God wants part of that penis chopped off", not "His father had part of his penis chopped off, so he should be the same", and not "I prefer how penises look after part of it has been chopped off". All of you who read this with shriveled noses, YOU HAVE NO LEG TO STAND ON in this argument.

    MY BODY, MY CHOICE!

    • i'm circumcised too and i don't really have a problem with it.

    • @moamine11 That's fine. I'm circumcised and I do have a problem with it. Was it acceptable to do it to me against my consent, then, because you have no problem with it? I'd also point out that you've only ever been circumcised (since I'm guessing it was done to you shortly after birth). It's possible that if you could somehow experience what it was like to be uncircumcised, you'd have a serious problem with what was done to you.

    • that's true enmity, but for the moment i'm cool with it

  • Try to molest me now and see what happens.

Tell me you molested me then and watch as the world around you fades away.

Insane fuckers, I'd kill each and every person who ever touched my dick without my permission. Hell! I'd kill anyone who touches me, period, imagine having done that to me.

It makes me sick, and infuriates me. I hope there's a Hell. Just for them.

  • There is a certain very loud, very vocal minority on line, whose members are very opposed to circumcision for their own selfish personal reasons that have nothing to do with the welfare of boys and men. They will resort to virtually any tactic to discourage circumcision.
