More than any other fact, teenagers must learn that sexting is against the law. Parents won’t have much influence if they set up ultra strict rules about digital media use, because teens will find other ways to get online, like at school or at a friend’s house.

There are several things that parents can do to help ensure that their teenager doesn’t send or receive explicit images.

Sending near nude or nude pictures via mobile phone is growing more popular with teenagers and parents across the country are scrambling to make sure their teenagers are aware of the dangers of sexting.

Girls are more likely to send sexually explicit pictures than boys. Many teens report that they forward explicit photos on to others ever get caught, it emboldens other teens and suddenly sexting is everywhere.

Set Up a Healthy Home Environment

Teens who live in a well-adjusted home, have high self-esteem and are active and healthy are less likely to feel pressure to sext or to succumb to peer pressure to do so.

A healthy home also establishes good relationships between parents and children, opening the doors for communication.

In India It implies that the infants must get the best upbringing and that demands a stable family. Even today most families have three generations staying together.

Monitor Teens Social Media and Cellphones.

This doesn’t mean parents must check on their teens at all hours. Instead, random phone checks and access to a teen’s social media accounts for occasional inspection are usually enough to make teens nervous about getting caught with any explicit images on their devices.

Explain the Consequences of Sexting

Paint a vivid picture about what happens to teens who send explicit photos of minors, including jail time.

Use recent news stories of perpetrators your state to illustrate the situation. Having clear, real and shocking consequences in mind can discourage many teens from even participating.

Set Limits on Social Media Use

Many families have situations or times of the day where cellphones are banned such as at dinner. Keeping teens of f their phones for all hours is another good way to limit all night chat sessions and so forth. Another option is to keep phone chargers in the parents’ room so the teen cannot access them once in bed.

Educate Teens on What to Do.

Not only is creating a sexually explicit photo and sending it considered sexting, but so is simply forwarding such an image. Even asking for sexually explicit photos of another is part of the overall problem. Parents need to teach teenagers what to do if they receive a sext and how to proceed before they get into trouble.

Parents who remain calm and reasonable are more likely to be approached by a teen than parents who are emotional and judgmental."

Parents who do all these steps will create an open, communicative environment where teens are educated, aware and confident enough to resist the thrill or the pressure to engage in sexting.

Like most things in life, parents can only build a solid foundation for what they want their teens to do, but with wisdom and compassion teens are more likely to make the right choices when it comes to sexting.

Honestly, it hurts to read MyTakes that focus on parenting, and this is no exception. The way everything is explained creates these cookie-cutter, perfect shapes of how a family is supposed to be, and yet most families don't fit that shape. Not even close.

Sexting has less to do with peer pressure (like you mentioned a couple times) and a lot more to do with filling a void in a teen's life. They may feel empty, neglected, lonely, or depressed. That's why they sext.

A tip to parents: Don't be shitty fucking people. Listen to how your kids are feeling.

Well I think teenagers are old enough to make this choice for themselves
Even if you do this things they will make a way to do it because... We all have been teenagers and desire free will and stuff.. I am still a teenager tho
If you have raised your children thoughtful and it isn't included in any bad way there shouldn't be such problems even if there is, if the teenager is smart enough she/will realize its mistake
We all make mistakes after all^^ the important is what we will do afterwards

This is not really the best way to prevent it. How long will parents hold on to their children? My parents still do everything for me, but I did end up seeing with my exes, right? My parents didn't even know.

@mattai787 as soon as the child hits puberty, they are leaving to grow. That is the time when they already need to understand sex ed and dealing with certain issues like cat calling and abusive relationships. I believe sexting is a part of this. The problem isn't really with sexting itself. It's about adolescents learning to take their decisions sensibly as a whole. I have many unpopular opinions about it, and I'll speak of them later.

Sexting is not against the law. Just as phone sex, explicit Skype session etc aren't against the law.. ..

It's exchange of nude or explicit pics of underage pics that is against the law. Distribution of child pornography... Other such as revenge porn can also be prosecuted. Depends on the law of where you are.

Well first let's talk about us. You're on the internet right this momentsecond which means that you're interconnected with the opportunity to view millions of pornographic websites and obviously just as many in multiples unknown of pornographic images and movies. So at the snap of a button you can do this, perhaps on your mobile, in public, even in a crowded area and simply not be caught through careful shifting of the chair and angle with no one the wiser. You can also send a text message with no images and no one is going to read it without the whole need for a suspicious appearance, especially one of length, so if you can how are you going to beat individuals who are only a little younger than yourself? You're talking about a stage where the individuals are not only discovering sexuality but fighting for their freedom and individuality so you're in a very bad place. Now think on yourself again; if your parents today...

took your cell phone and placed it on THEIR nightstand because they don't want you "being naughty" but then you're bothering to "educate" them on what to do if it happens to them is this not counterintuitive? This is what I mean; you're offering great sounding advice but put two and two together and it's obviously not rational because not only do you shift the onus to the parent but now you've essentially created a nonsensical breach of trust in which the parent is presumed to be keeping the teenager from a behavior which they can't because if you can do it in public you can do it in class or on campus or when mom and dad aren't around. So you can't do both. You can't assume they'll fail and act on it but then educate them as though they will be fundamentally assaulted rather than willing participants. This is the same logic as abstinence and (surprise) it doesn't work. I don't know what "research" you do but I'd recommend some actual real-world experimentation.

What you call a disturbing trend is a normal facet of life. You're writing this about teenagers but let's look at teenagers less as an age group and more as just sexually aware humans. For adults the same risks exist, the moment you release anything on the internet it can be accessed, so then what exactly are you to say? If you want to "combat" this you need to really look at what it is rather than try and reframe it to some imaginary boogieman. So reality is that you cannot trust anyone and it doesn't matter if you're male or female, you're at risk all the same, so then what needs to be done is instead of trying to control people you inform them of the risks and express that through reasoning. You're not going to beat anyone your age (and the teenage brain is about the same as yours in development) through brute force and instead will just incite rebellion. You're no Jesus so I imagine you disobeyed your parents at some point therefore I would gather that you knew, in your disobedience, what you were doing to some extent. You had rationalized it. Just recently I spoke with a father desperately trying to keep his adolescent daughter from destroying her reputation. He agreed to let me share his story and advice I gave him in hopes of helping other parents in a similar situation. The father says his daughter, now 16, has been sending pictures and videos of herself masturbating to at least one boy for the past three years. "I have done everything in the world you can think of to get her to stop. She will not stop even if I take away all of her electronic devices and fully explain the downside of sexting," he says. He and his wife have had numerous heartfelt talks with their daughter to no avail. His daughter has even gone to trouble of using a friend’s phone to send explicit videos of herself. While there's no simple way to curb adolescent sexting, as in the case of this teen, it's important to pay attention to factors that may lead youth to sext.

First, figure out why your teen is sexting. Remember that all behavior is purposeful. Once you understand what your teen is getting out of sexting, you'll be in a better position to talk to her about the perils of sending sexually explicit images. Connect your child with a positive role model. I advised the father who sought my advice to link his daughter with a strong positive female mentor. Sometimes kids (like adults) just need to hit the reset button. Is your child being picked on or harassed, or has your teen's reputation suffered from sexting? If so, your child may not feel it's possible to change, and that way of thinking can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. In some cases, when a child's reputation has been seriously damaged and he or she isn't able to make a fresh start, a change of schools may be needed for the child to start over and make new, healthy friendships.

You mean puberty? That's the only "factor" that leads to the behavior. You said you gave advice, which is interesting, because I can't see what advice you could possibly give seeing as you give generic advice about everything you post about. It's very cold and distant. You want to get the girl to stop? Easy. You attack the root of the problem which is her feelings for the boy. You can't inform her. You can't restrict her. You definitely can't avoid it happening and because her friends are in support (I guess) this means that it is normalized and accepted which is something else you didn't cover and overlooked. There's a lot here. So you've got an exhibitionist human correct? So then why don't they compromise? Strange, yes, but you can't stop the girl so you tell the girl to not leave identifying features. Keep her face out of the images. I find in my time that curbing a behavior is easier than stopping one and of course she's just rebelling because she doesn't see the harm.

And considering it has been 3 YEARS in her case she could be correct. The boy (s) may not actually spread them. Or worse she may be getting paid and if she is then there's no reason for her to worry about her reputation because that's what gets her economically ahead. There's a lot of details missing but ultimately you can't solve this by just looking at it on it's face; you need the motives and they are never surface motives like "she really likes him!", no, because if they are reciprocating that garners trust on it's own and so forth and so on. Something something understanding communication something. I could go on forever I think as to why this just isn't effectual information.

At certain extent I Agree with you. When it comes to sexting, it's better to be proactive than reactive. The daughter who was sexting was confused and trying to figure out who she is. She needs to feel the unconditional love of both her father and mother. I advised her father to continue to let her know she is worthy, special and loved. Research has shown time and time again that even when we feel like our teens aren't listening to us, they really are. Often teens don’t see the big picture. They live in the moment and don't think through the consequences of their actions. In fact, it's normal for adolescents, whose brains are still developing, to act before they think. It's only after they have been stung by the aftermath of sexting that they regret their actions. Thank You !!!

And what of the "Eventuality Problem"? Let's say that your case resolved did it resolve due to intervention or just self-resolve? The odds are if it was going for 3 years and then the teen stopped, presuming she did, it wasn't interventions. Studies do show that everyone is genuinely listening, yeah, but studies of behavior show that some just phase out on their own. People grow up and realize their own errors and fix them.

There are heart-breaking accounts of teens driven to suicide when naked pictures of them are widely disseminated which results in bullying and harassment. There are even articles claiming that sexting is “the new normal” among teens. There is no question that sexting can have very negative consequences. Technically, when a teen just has a naked image of him- or herself on his or her own phone, this “counts” as child pornography. Sending or sharing this type of image gets even more complicated. In some cases, sexting teens have been charged or even required to register as pedophiles. However, most law enforcement officials aren’t interested in pursuing this kind of case.

It is possible that because established couples have less frequent sex than younger counterparts, the fact that they send fewer sexts may be indicative of the fact that they have less sex anyway.
