What is the purpose of areolas?

are they just for sex appeal? I can't really think of any other purpose. the bigger they are the more eye popping and gorgeous they tend to make the boobies so that seems like all they are for lol. and I guess some guys like smaller ones too, but is there actually another purpose for them?

  • I read "they tend to make the boobies" and thought "this fool is a dumbass cause he thinks they make babies" but nevermind

It attracts the baby to the nipple. You're supposed to lightly push the kids mouth onto the nipple or whatever and they latch on to the "eye catcher"

    • uh what? lol anyways that makes sense I guess. it attracts more than just babies though! hahah

    • I just misread your details is all

  • They're honing beacons for babies when they're breast feeding... No seriously, look it up.

    • interesting. they're honing beacons for me too! lol

    • Homing, like a Homing Pidgeon that flies home, not "honing", which is sharpening something. Sorry, but I had to. Otherwise, this is correct.

    • much appreciated. I've been saying honing for years and never thouht about it. Kind of like the whole "play it by year/ear thing"

  • Fact, babies are supposed to suck on the areola to trigger the breast to make(more)milk as they suckle.

  • Why do we always forget the true purpose of breasts, To breast feed! and the answer below me explains it perfectly.

    • right but areolas aren't actually the nipple, which does the breast feeding. areolas are different

    • areolas are apart of the nipple and they actually provide lubricant for the nipple, so yes, they are a part of the breast feeding process

  • They are part of the mechanics of babies getting our breast milk or in some cases our bf's!

  • Anatomically speaking that entire area along with the breast tissue is made up of a different type of epithelial cells that have the ability to produce milk.

  • Babies have very blurry eye sight so the color variation helps them to go towards the nipple.
