When a guy says "You give really good head" he doesn't mean "You give really good head". What he means is "I really really liked it when you gave me head, and I'd really really like you to do it again sometime very soon".
It's got very little to do with your technique, and much more to do with how much he enjoys it.
And you don't have to be all that good at him for him to enjoy it a lot.
Why would a guy enjoy something that isn't good? If he enjoys it, doesn't that make it good? It's hard for me to think from this perspective. I'm pretty sure if someone went down on me and they were bad at it, I wouldn't enjoy it, right?
Like I said, you don't have to be all that good at it for him to enjoy it a lot. His **** has seen far more action from his hand than anything else, and you can be sure that your mouth felt a lot better than that.
Why would a guy lie about it and risk getting another one if it was bad. Sure people say bad sex is better than no sex but come on (no pun intended). I'm sure you were great, it doesn't take much to please most guys.
I'm not a guy but just from common sense, I'm going to say that even if you aren't spectacular, at the very least you were good enough at it to make it enjoyable for him. If you were really that bad, then he's not going to say something that would risk him getting another bad bj.
