It all goes back to biology and evolution.
Forget about the last 500 years of relatively modern and stable western society; that's a tiny blip on the history of humans. Think back 10,000 years, before "society" was stable enough for agriculture and cities. Life was hard and short, and tribes needed children to continue and to look after the "elderly" (i.e., people who lived much beyond 40). Men fought over women, and fought wars with other tribes to get their women. On average, 20-30% of children failed to reach their 2nd birthday, and 15% or so of women didn't survive childbirth.
Breasts were important for a couple of reasons.
1. Developed breasts meant that a girl had become a woman, and thus able to marry (where that was even a concept) and have children. Men needed a way to identify sexually-mature females from a distance, and the presence of breasts was a common way of doing so.
2. Breasts were almost exclusively the source of food for infants for their first year or so. Prominent breasts were a sign that a woman was likely to be able to feed her children and thus those children had a better chance of survival, just as prominent, wide hips meant a woman was likely to survive childbirth and be able to have healthy children. The breast-waist-hip ratio that was desirable suggested a woman who was "good breeding material" and has remained consistent throughout history. Even Playboy has noted that while Playmates have gotten thinner over the years, their figure ratios have stayed the same.
You'll find that you can trace almost everything about human sexuality and attraction back to the necessities for reproduction and survival. All of our rules of society are ultimately built upon that structure, and always have been.
I think the female body is gorgeous all over but I don't put boobs on a pedestal any higher than I would her stomach or shoulders ya know. If my eyes have a tendency to jump to anything it is surely her butt. I have always been into butts as long as I can remember being attracted to girls. I don't know why. But I like boobs just like all parts of an attractive girls body. But I prefer them small or average. I don't like large boobs. My girlfriend and I were talking about it and I think the reason I don't like large boobs is because in the future they tend to sag. And since I have never been much for hook ups or one night stands, I tend to look at girls for long term reasons and not short term. So part of what makes me give a girl a thumbs up or thumbs down (just at glance) is future in mind. I have also noticed my friends are into totally different girls than me. they like the typical Barbie, big fake boobs, tanning bed tan girl and I won't even notice those types of girls if they were sitting right beside me. A girl who has smaller boobs and a tight athletic body and obviously has a healthy lifestyle and works out and has a little muscle/curves on her...now that will get my attention. I don't care what her boobs have to say about it LOL! That says to me she most likely has a LIFELONG commitment to being in shape. Not giant saggy boobs and skin that looks like a baseball glove from years of tanning beds...and if she has some junk in her trunk, well that's just a bonus :)
Depending on where you are from makes a huge difference. In the US we have totally sexualized them, when many parts of Europe not so. This is why you sometimes will see beaches that are French or Dutch owned and a few in the US where many of the women go topless naturally. Its all ones presception of the human body!
Go to many of the Caribbean islands for vacation and visit the beaches and you see topless and nude on a regular basis with most not paying any attention to it. Then the American tourist with eyes at full attention as they gawk at what they see.
Aside from their role for some in sexual relations, the attraction or preference for larger boobs goes back many years. Larger breasts symbolize higher estrogen levels, which would make a woman more fertile. So, back in the hunter and whatnot days thousands of years ago, where sex was purely for reproduction, women with larger breasts were more sought after.

Some guys like them and some guys dont. my boyfriend isn't a boob guy so boobs are whatever and he can careless about them

Please allow me to educate you... not all men are boob-crazy.
To a man like me, breasts are like sun-roofs on cars ~ completely optional equipment. I am much more interested in what a babe has in her trunk and under the hood, if you know what I mean. I like a babe to have a nice swing on her back porch, you know... a nice big backyard.
Some of us are of an entirely different religion.
It's a parental thing, the size make us think of well our children will be taken care of. Sounds funny I know but we love that it make us want to play with them. Me personally I like small breast no bigger than C. I like being able to breath while I'm having fun.

I've also heard (although I think it's b.s.) that as men are attracted to butts, like all animals, boobs on some mental level remind us of butts...again I think it's b.s...but the idea that men are attracted to butts (hence dogs smelling butts, monkey showing off their butts to lure men, doggystyle sex) as a sign of a women's sexual availability I suppose if you thought boobs looked like a butt (particularly when squeezed together) it may explain it.
Me personally tend to believe a portion of Freud's theory that it relates to suckling. The larger the boobs, in theory, the more milk they could provide. I suppose sucking breasts may trigger a soothing sensation (like a child) and just the sight and presence of them reminds us of being nurtured... all on a subconscious level. me personally I don't know why but I love boobs
We wouldn't go so crazy over them if you guys didn't try so hard to keep them covered!
