Why do private schools have a lower teen pregnancy rate?

I don't really agree with abstinence only education but it does seem to work sometimes. I know private schools never have pregnant girls. Ever.

  • Take it from someone who used to go to Catholic schools AND someone who studied the field of education, I know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, parents of students in Catholic schools are often strict. So, the reason is because they're more likely to be virgins in the first place. Even though hardly anyone uses birth control in Catholic schools, it doesn't matter, because they don't have sex until they're about 19/20 years old (at the earliest, on average.) I also know many of them wait for religious reasons.

It has nothing to do with sexual education. There is no correlation between sexual education and teen pregnancy rates.

    • @Asker Thanks for MHO! I appreciate it!

  • Kids receive a totally different set of social values, expectations and habits at a private school. Often the schools can cherry pick the best students but basically only a certain social standing will get your kids into private school. Most simply couldn't afford it. Making it about privalige. often parents are able to spend more time at home with their kids. Often in 2 parent house holds etc. I'm supprised the gap isn't bigger

  • Yes, they do have girls in private schools who wind up pregnant. They get kicked out or sent to a school for pregnant teens until they have the baby.

    • More often, they discreetly went to the abortion clinic, or in many cases they were frog-marched there by parents.

    • @Curmudgeon No. I'm sure some have abortions, but the majority do not.

  • because the parents are paying so much money, that they would murder their kids if they ever wasted it.

  • That's because they get kicked out of the private school when they get pregnant.

  • Well a lot are not coed to start. Second, they also give you far less time to mingle, with a higher teacher to student rate, so you have less time to meet others. In the US as well, private schools are often religious by nature as well, and often hide pregnancies, well maybe not the school, but parents do out of shame, I have seen it before.

    • The religious schools do not allow students to stay there during the pregnancy. They also do not allow you to remain in the school or return at all if you get an abortion

    • @crystalt70 that is disgusting... but I am not surprised... no wonder it never shows up on their records...

    • Abortion is against religion. They will not condone it and will kick you out for doing it. They also do not want unwed pregnancy to be the precedent for other kids. That too is against religious beliefs. There is a school here where those unwed girls can go during their pregnancy. This school is kept really quiet. Most don't know it exists until they are someone they know winds up there. The girls are allowed to go back to their original school (in most cases) after having the baby, but are not allowed to discuss the child or bring pictures to school, so the other girls don't think it's okay to have sex or to desire having a baby.

  • Better educated parents who tend to be more liberal when it comes to teaching kids about safe sex , which in turns pressure the school into teaching more about it , etc etc etc

  • Better educated parents preempt the situation...

  • Girls at private schools may be opting for quietly getting an abortion more often than at public schools.

  • Private schools are for people who want to be their, To learn and gurantee a good future, Hence why they pay so much for the privellage, Education is paramount.

Whereas in public schools, The majority of people couldn't give a shit and just want to go home all day and receieve less education, do more stupid shit and are more likely to get knocked up.
