Personally speaking, I have not been with a woman who wasn't turned on by it. But why? I don't really understand it, I'm happy to oblige...but I don't really understand why so many women love it.

On the purely physical side, people who enjoy it like the combination of pain and pleasure, but of which are extreme reactions of nerves, and can kind of send mixed signals when combined together. It's kind of like how people can enjoy eating something that's sweet and sour, or sweet and salty. Having flavors that are normally considered to be opposites creates an interesting and pleasant flavor combination.

On a more emotional level, a majority of women desire a strong, dominant man. Look at most romance novels, the hero is often a "bad boy" type who is strong and suave and assertive. Yet dominant men are increasingly rare today, because it's increasingly less acceptable for boys to be boys, and fewer boys have fathers to teach them how to be a man (and even those WITH fathers often don't get that, because the father doesn't know how to be a man either). Society has been teaching women to be independent, which has increased pressure on women to "have it all" (a good education and career, but also a marriage and motherhood), and to some extend this has been done at the expense of men, who have had to suppress their masculine/aggressive/sexual behavior in a co-ed workplace.

This has led to male dominance being moved into the realm of a fetish. Women have accepted that men are rarely men in the real world anymore (which they both like and hate), but they still very much want a dominant man in the bedroom, perhaps even more than in the past, and so slightly more extreme dominant behavior, like spanking and hair-pulling, has become a common (though not totally universal) desire.
