Guys get erections when they get aroused. If he likes you, and was watching you play VB, he might have thought it was really sexy. Maybe your body looks great in your VB clothes, or maybe he liked the way you moved, or whatever. Anyway, it made him sexually aroused.
Younger guys (think: Jr high) tend to get random boners, and even older guys occasionally get them, though for most guys it mostly tapers off by HS. But when you're going through puberty and the hormones are raging, you don't always have 100% control over your bodily functions.

Yes some guys might get one if they see a girl they like but its not like they'll automatically get one. That doesn't happen to most guys when they get past 15 or so. I think girls playing volleyball is hot so maybe that's why.
it could have been a reflex erection. sometimes, it just happens, regardless of feeling aroused or whatnot.
