I think reputation is more often about what you seem like than what you are really like... meaning there can be a correlation but it could be just about how she dresses or behaves. On the other hand you get a lot of girls who act sweet and innocent but they are the ones who sleep around. Also, people will often label those they are jealous of... or were rejected by. I've personally seen both cases, where jealous girls spread gossip and a rejected guy does and curiously they both tend to give that person the label of a slut. I think overall it's always best to get to know them for yourself rather than just join a crowd of people throwing insults... especially if that's your only basis of their validity.

Reputation always comes from people's perception... you can be a slut but to be called a slut, other people must call you that and it can be true or not. Same with anything else, you can have a great reputation but be an asshole in reality. There is a correlation but it's not always that simple.

I would say that probably half the time, she's earned that reputation. But that also means that a lot of the time, it's a bullshit label/rumor started by someone who is upset with her for some reason - a guy she rejected or a girl who is jealous of her or whatever.

Often, it's not hard to figure out which of those it is, by simply observing her behavior around other people for a while. It's usually obvious pretty quickly whether the label applies or not.
