Are Japanese Underwear/Loincloth Uncomfortable?

I've noticed both ancient Japanese underwear and loincloth used by tribes are very tight and narrow cloths going between the legs and goes inside the butt cracks like thongs/G-string. In the Japanese variant the cloth going into the cracks also keep the underwear in place. So I'm wondering if the underwear are comfortable or not. If not, why did they wear them?

To me it doesn't look comfortable. Especially not outside of BDSM.

  • I believe they were only worn when doing certain physical activities and wearing them temporarily is just fine.

    • It makes sense, because of wearing them everyday seems too much if you ask me. It doesn't look comfortable to have twisted fabric in your butt crack. In addition it takes extremely long time to take the underwear on and off because of a lot of wrapping. It's not practical when it comes to going frequently to the bathroom.

    • Girls deal with the discomfort of a thong up their butt so this shouldn't be much of an issue if your used to it.

    • Yes, the mawashi is used during sumo wrestling. The fundoshi was used by commoners (men) in ancient Japan in their daily lives. Some tribal people also wears loincloth similar to the fundoshi.
