It's a double-standard, no question about it, but there are important, historical reasons for that. From our best knowledge, humans have only been agricultural for about 10,000 years, but as soon as we started working land and staying in one place - rather than roaming the land hunting and gathering - family structures were hugely important, and so was inheritance - keeping the land you spent your entire life working in your family. That meant paternity was incredibly important. You knew who the mother of a child was, but only a faithful wife ensured you knew who the father was.

With the relative stability that agriculture allowed - societies developed, and rules for that society were created, and inheritance and paternity were so important - especially among the ruling class, that societies rules were literally built around those issues. People were killed and families destroyed - even wars were fought over paternity and inheritance, resulting in thousands or even hundreds of thousands of deaths. It was taken very seriously, and became deeply-seated in the male-female dynamic.
