I don't put them in my own butt, but I have used them with lovers usually as an introduction to anal play or as an adjunct to penis/vagina play.

As such, I tend to look for a smaller model, maybe 4" or so in length and perhaps 1.5" or so at it's widest point. I mean, a cm plus or minus can make a big difference so I also prefer to involve my partner in selection to see what appeals to her, and what she thinks she'd like. Shopping for toys together is a bonding experience, at least until you know what they like well enough to shop for them confidently on your own.

A vibration feature might be nice, but I haven't gotten one with that yet. Just the simple smaller jelly plugs.

I don't really see the point in a butt plug.
I have a nice collection of sex toys and the one thing they have in common is that they were designed by women, for women. A butt plug is a man's idea of what kind of toy he thinks a woman needs.

Big enough to fill but not cause bleeding and should be lubricated and vibrating. If being used to stretch in prep for anal sex buy a set of different sizes and work your way up gradually.

If you enjoy anal, of course go for a butt plug. I'd suppose that the increasing size of the plug is made, indeed, for plugging, also read, filling up. It should feel good since it fills you up considerably.
Of course, don't overdo it with size. It's still pretty delicate in there, you don't want to damage anything.
