A man can get an erection for any of 10,000 reasons. Having your clothes rub against your penis, having a lustful thought (even if no women are present), seeing a woman whom you find attractive (even if she is fully clothed) and staring at her for 30 seconds (especially if staring at her chest or crotch), driving on a bumpy road and having your seat bounce against the perineum (the area of skin between the testicles (or vagina - women have them, too) and the anus), etc etc.
I’ve gotten erections just by reading/thinking about sex or naked women or vaginas, or by reading/talking about them. I had a talk recently with a female friend about all that stuff and next thing I knew I was hard as a rock.
Having said that, no, a guy isn’t going to get an erection JUST by sitting next to an attractive woman. I have sat next to many attractive woman and paid them little/no attention and didn’t get an erection. Plus, an erection will often go away pretty quickly if you just think about something else. If I have an unwanted erection, I sometimes start thinking about algebra or paint colors or something complete unsexy, and then I’m usually soft within seconds.
Oh, and no, I don’t avoid her after that. She didn’t do anything wrong. I deal with it /control my thoughts etc.

Yes, some guys get a boner from sitting next to an attractive woman. Did you ever take into consideration that he was embarrassed that he got hard? That is afraid you're going to notice the bulge in his pants? He may like the shit out of her but thinks he's going to ruin it by having an erection

All that happens mainly if the woman is attractive or sexually incited dressed, ofcourse a guy will get a boner, plus if the woman uses her Sensuality, Arousal, Giggle, Look, then that's a massive turn on, plus if he gets a boner he might try to back off because of embarassement...
