Yes, you can be petite and tall. Petite is a measurement of body size, not necessarily height. So a petite figure is a very thin, or slim figure. Instead of like athletic, which would be toned and muscular. The same way that a thicker girl can be tall or short.

I think it might just be with all the negative connotations to words like thin or slim or skinny, stuff like that which has grown across society to be associated with eating disorders, that petite is just the most polite way to say it

You can be slim, or slightly built, but you can't be 6' tall and be petite, by definition. Petite means "short and thin", and unless you're on an alien planet where females are all 9' tall, you can't be considered short.

Usually someone who is petite is generally small, not always specifically short, but rather someone who is generally skinnier than most or don't have as large breasts or butt as most girls might.

Being tall doesn't mean you are not petite.

'Petit' -from French- means small.
We live in times where FAT people are described as 'plus-size' - so it's not surprising when language distortion appears on the opposite end of the scale as well.
