Can you tell the difference between a hickey and a bruise? Is there even a difference?

I was out of town one weekend and met a guy at a bar who I ended up making out with who left me two really noticeable hickeys on the front of my neck. When I got home and saw my friends with benefits a few days later he saw them even though I tried to cover them up with concealer. He asked me how I got bruises on my neck and seemed really concerned about it. I don't know if he doesn't know what hickeys are or if he thought they were bruises and not hickeys. Is there even any differences between bruises and hickeys?

it's hard for me to tell the different. location might hint at one over the other, but they can look pretty bad. also, MAC pro longwear concealer is great for that kinda thing.
