  Just because there are some verses which mention freedom of belief, doesn't mean it wasn't spread by the sword. Those who refused Islam were met with death.

  islam has prescribed severe penalty for a serious offence like adultery. "slaying unbelievers wherever you find them" "make war with infidels in your neighborhood" "Kill the Jews and Christians if they don't convert to islam" ETC. These are words of a warlord... not a peaceful compassionate being.
