Do Men Not Care About Waist-to-Hip Ratio Anymore?

When you look at evolutionary biology studies, such as Singh (1993) and many subsequent (google 'studies WHR'), they tell us that the most attractive thing about a woman's body is the difference between her waist and hip size. That is, a low waist-to-hip ratio, i.e. a small waist relative to hip size (I say relative because it's about proportion, not actual size).

A low WHR gives the in-and-out shape that is stereotypically associated with a woman's body, as opposed to the straight up and down look of a man's figure. For example, this actress in the 70s:

Do Men Not Care About Waist-to-Hip Ratio Anymore?

Or, Rachel Bilson:

Do Men Not Care About Waist-to-Hip Ratio Anymore?

This is as opposed to a straight body shape, where there is no defined waist, i.e. the waist does not curve inwards, and then the hips flare out. For example, Cameron Diaz below, and Kate Upton. Although the latter has very large breasts, she still has a very straight body.

Do Men Not Care About Waist-to-Hip Ratio Anymore?

The point I'm trying to make with this post is this: it seems, in today's world at least, men don't care about the actual shape of the woman's body, they don't care about the waist-to-hip curve, the waist to hip ratio that the studies say men all find attractive. It seems that most men care about large breast size, as long as the woman is slim, or relatively slim, depending on his tastes. There are lots of celebrities, porn stars and men's magazine models who have a straight body, but just very large breasts (whether real or fake.....)

So, what do you think? Do guys these days not actually care about the shape of a body, the WHR? I would be interested to know your opinions...

  • Great, more things to worry about/be insecure about when it comes to the female body.

  • I certainly care about WHR. That's the main reason I don't find Kate Upton attractive in the slightest.

    • Ah really? You seem like a rarity...

  • I prefer a straight body if I'm being asked, but honestly have no real preference

  • i hear you... but unfortunately some men might not care about it :(

    • cool... so men have to like what some studies say is reality? pretty obvious i's NOT reality.

    • @willITT 'Reality' is very hard to define given that people's aesthetic tastes are very influenced by social conditioning. Guys are exposed to images of Playboy type figures from the age of about 10!

  • Waist to hip ratio for insecure women is what dick size is for insecure men.

  • Did we ever? I think almost all the hoohah about women's appearance is the media and self imposed hype in competing with other women. If it were up to real men, women would use 90% less makeup, dress simply and not bother with elaborate hair styles. If your body is proportional, boob size and "ratios" don't matter. Better Jennifer Anniston than Kate Upton or Beyonce.

  • Just because someone is a celebrity doesn't mean you have the right to discuss their bodies like they're some sort of freak-science experiment in detail. How about you post a photo of yourself and let us discuss why we as women no longer find men like you attractive?

    • It was a question. It's not as if he they said haha look at this ugly bitch

    • I mean he's saying "straight bodies". That men don't care about "hip to waist ratio" anymore. Using celebrities pictures and labeling their bodies. Just seems really unnecessary to me, especially while under Anonymous the entire time, since no one can label or pick him apart in return.

    • He's asking a question, he wants an answer. He's labelling with facts, he's not being nasty about it.

    • Show All
  • It would be way down there with, what kind of car she drives.

  • Who the fuck cares? Let people like what they like and stop butting into people's lives

  • honestly, they would look so much better if there would be a waist to hip ratio, admit it. I think the first and second body types are not that great but the last one doesn't look that bad but it'd look much better if there would be a ratio. No body shaming, everyone has flaws

  • I do. Then again I naturally pay attention to these things more so than your average person.

  • As far as body shape for me as long as her stomach is relatively flat good enough. I never really paid attention to hips (or boob size) that much. Now if she has a jelly belly and I can actually see waves traveling across it with a light tap even with tightened abs then that's getting on the flabby side (yes it's kinda like the made-bed test with the quarter). Other than that I tend to notice hair before scrutinizing body shape anyway.

  • Honestly I like the first picture better because she has a more appealing body because of the golden ratio which emphasis hip to wait ratio on females in order to have the most visibly appealing body to men. I like a defined hip to wait ratio like that first picture not so much straight and narrow.

    Golden Ratio = right ratio.

  • I never cared about that ratio at all.

  • The main consumers of such photoshoots are women, not men. If it was men I guarantee you they would definitely have more distinctable hips. There are several studies about what men prefer and what women think men prefer and women always think men prefer a lot slender women than they actually do.

  • y u put math in sexy

    sexy is just sexy ok

  • I think it doesn't really matter guys like sexy women there is no real formula to it. The media tends to put famous women on a pedestal and calls them sexy though these days they are trying tell men that plus size women are the sexist. In my youth I used to date a short thick girl with a pretty face who hadn't an ounce of fat on her and to me at she was the sexist woman in the world at least back.

  • How about men just like whatever they like and women just start owning what they have.

  • Exactly my thoughts, I just feel it looks unproportioned. But guys like what they like.

  • Well I do care.
Kate Upton's body is a saggy disaster, no thanks.
