Do you know the difference between a fetish and a kink?

A kink is something sexual that someone likes to do with themselves or consensually with partners. This is usually something considered outside of mainstream sexual activities. A kink usually brings extra erotic energy to a sexual encounter.

A fetish is similar to a kink, but the difference is that something is a fetish when it MUST be present in order for the person to achieve sexual arousal or enjoyment. This can be an act (like having sex in public) or an object (like feet). The important thing to remember here is that a fetish is something that the person cannot get aroused without—for some people simply fantasizing about the fetish can be enough while others may need to actually engage with the object or behavior in some way.

Superb Opinion
  • That's not entirely correct.
The defining characteristic of a "fetish" is that it is a fixation on a traditionally NON-sexual body part or activity.

The inability to reach sexual satisfaction by conventional means is the side effect of the fixation on the unconventional.
It's the result of an abnormal sexual conditioning.

  • Everyone has their own opinion, but I see a "kink" as visceral in nature; the appreciation of body parts, fluids and different things to do with and to them.
I see a fetish as fixation on non-sexual objects to which sexual attraction occurs. Like feet, fishnets, piercings, etc.

  • yes... I've been here at G@G long enough...

  • Which means a fetish is super rare

  • I didn’t know that

  • Yeap I know the difference

I have one kink that almost became a fetish

  • Ohh i didn't know the difference till now... i used them interchangeably always

  • I have never given it much thought. Makes sense though.

  • I've ALWAYS known the difference... however, one is the actual, "old school" definition, and the other is the new "adaptive" definition.

  • Interesting. Is that the case? I didn't know that.

  • I've heard this before on many occasions but never seen it really substantiated. Not that I'm calling it into question, as I'm not aware of the differences between kink and fetish (and thus not claiming otherwise), but what exactly validates this sentiment? Is it just a bunch of people in community repeating it, or does it have a merited source?

(I'm also not implying that a community's distinction can't be valid without official scientific or literary backing)

    • These definitions were stated by Rosara Torrisi, PhD from the Long Island Institute of Sex Therapy. As far as I know, experts agree on the distinction between the two.

    • Appreciate it, I'll take a look

    • No problem :)

  • Thank you for the lesson.

  • Yeah one is called a fetish and the other is called a kink

  • Yes!

  • @subarugirl Good Girl :)

  • Yeah but no lol

    • Huh?

  • One starts with a k and the other starts with an f.

  • I want to say that you can able to control your kinks but you can't control your fetish (I mean that's coming from childhood memory or something else) for example I have foot fetish to well-groomed female feet, when I was kid I saw our neighbour's daughter, she was painting her toes in their garden, I was 12 or 13 and she was 25 or something like that, first time my fetish start from there...
