Do you think it's dumb that in the USA, 18 years old is not legally old enough to buy alcohol?

yet it's legally old enough to move out of your parents to live on your own, buy tobacco, have consented sex, buy porn/adult content, and serve the US military to fight for wars of rich elites?

  • Apparently, the law makers tried and the public failed them:
    Quote:
„Following MLDA reductions in the US, research in several states provided persuasive evidence of sharp increases in rates of fatal and nonfatal MVAs appearing immediately after the implementation of lower drinking ages. These scientific findings galvanized public pressure on lawmakers to raise MLDAs and, in response, the federal government introduced the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, which imposed a reduction of highway funds for states if they did not increase their MLDA to 21 years.“

  • Scientific fact: the human brain doesn’t fully mature until around 27 years of age. 21 year olds drink way too much (I know I did). People under 21 are not mature enough to realize the consequences of the decisions or actions. I think the drinking age and the driving age should be raised. 18 for a drivers license and 23 for drinking. DUIs should result in permanent forfeiture of your driving privileges. And if you’re drunk and are involved in an accident where someone dies, you’re guilty of murder.

  • I'm the only girl who voted no so far? 😅

I work in ADAPT so it doesn't seem dumb to me. I think it's great 18 year olds can't legally drink, but I'm pretty biased.

  • when my grandparents were my age it was 18 and everyone wanted it to be 21 so they changed it

  • Given how it affects the brain, and the speed at which the brain develops, no, I think it makes a lot of sense.

  • Bruv back in Lebanon I used to buy a 6 pack beer when I was 8, probably had a few sips as well shit didn't matter

  • Yeah I think it should just be 18 since that's when we are considered adults

  • Those laws were passed years ago, after it was discovered that 18 and 19 year olds had a much higher accident rate driving, and much of that was due to alcohol. So no, it's not dumb, it has saved some lives.

  • It used to be 18 in our state.
A bunch of drunk kids that were killing themselves and others wrecked it for others.
    We were an island state.
All of the other states around us were 21, so it was geart to go out on weekends if you lived near the boader.

  • In the 70s it was legal to buy alcohol at 18. It caused a lot of underage drinking and a lot of drunk driving accidents.

  • No, I think it's dumb that people drink alcohol at all.

That shit is poison. Anyone with half a brain avoids it entirely.

  • Its ridiculous. You just turned 18, you get your draft papers in the mail. surprise! You're in the army now. Here's an M-16, now go to the desert and kill terrorists.

Oh whats that? You want a beer and a cigarette? Nope, you're too young.

  • It’s not dumb. Alcohol can alter the mind and cause deadly outcomes. Why would you need it at 18 and in highschool?

    • Cuz some people are actually busy living adult lives at 18. They can have everything else a adult has like house, kids, job, be married but can't drink? Doesn't make sense to me

    • There is a reason why auto insurance is more expensive for 18 year olds as well. Their brains are still maturing and teenagers can cause automobile accidents with immaturity. The actuarial tables confirm this.

    • Even with that being married makes a insurance rates go down. So not all 18 year olds are paying a lot of car insurance if they are seen as more responsible

  • We tried that. Plenty of reasons to raise it to 21.
