Do you think that conversion therapy works, and should it be permitted?

Conversion therapy is a therapy designed to change sexual orientation and desire from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual. It has a long and bad record of being ineffective and causing depression and suicide, yet it continues in some places. In other places, it is actually illegal. What do you think about it?

  • I've heard the story of a man who was "healed" from his mis association with gay.. which was rooted in childhood traumas. I don't know that it was a specific therapy approach that did it but finding the root emotional issues and resolving those. Something I read, talked to those involved with and read web site long ago.

I don't know enough about this approach to say. If someone wants to seek help for their emotional state and resolving it, then leave it open to them. Some things that are very difficult have low probability of working. the biggest contributor to success is someone finding the root causes and resolving them, thus willingness is key.

We ALL have emotional programming that defines who we are in addition to hormonal and personality. Some clearly are confused in who they are and willing to do "some work" to be "hormonally changed", surgically changed... ah the magic pills of our medical system at work! The real solutions are usually much harder. Why not allow them to do the emotional work the other direction? The only question is if who we are " works for us" at the time and if we want to do hard work to make changes. In some cases, it may be impossible or or seem insurmountable.

  • Why the hell would I want a bunch of boring straight people to make me boring and straight like them? Being bisexual is awesome and I can't imagine being confined to only dealing with women and their bullshit for the rest of my dating life.

    Men are sssoooo much easier.

It doesn't work by the way, I had sexual feelings for both men and women who looked feminine enough before I had even a remote idea of what sex was.

    • Thanks for mho and you cool ladies out there don't my comment personally 🤜🤛

  • I have lesbian tendencies but I married my husband and we have kids. Thing I learned in college was that I loved lesbian sex but I hate being in a relationship with a woman even a butch woman. It's actually a nightmare at times because lesbian relationships can be quite abusive. Men are a lot simpler, easy to manipulate, very straightforward, less emotional and manipulative and have a biological desire to provide.

  • It doesn't work and it should be illegal

  • I think that it does not work and therefore cruel. I think it should be made illegal everywhere and people and institutions proposing it should be prosecuted.

  • I didn't think that shit was legal anywhere in the US.

  • It's pretty barbaric and should be outlawed everywhere. It was originally created in the misconception that being homosexual was a mental disorder, and that retraining the brain was a cure to being gay. These days it is just carried out by people who can't accept homosexually.

  • I think it should be illegal

  • I think it's perfectly okay as long as the participant is willing. But don't try to push that on someone who doesn't want it.

I think the main issue at hand is LGBT advocacy groups want to ban the practice altogether because they don't think people should be allowed to leave their "club."

  • no I think this is fkn dumb
