Well that is a good question. Surely an orgasm (cumming) would make it go away, that's not always the case. Most erections go away on their own without the need for anything to be done. It's the same as when a woman gets wet when aroused; it goes away after a while if you shift your mind to something else and are no longer thinking about anything sexual. Men have an average of 11 erections a day and you can't expect them to orgasm each time an erection pops up. Men can experience erections that are not of a sexual nature. I tend to get many non-sexual erections. These erections pop up randomly when sex isn't even on my mind and no where near the state of arousal. Of course this is by no means exactly the same thing, but when a girl is "wet", it does not always mean that she's aroused!

there's a common condition called epididymal hypertension, aka 'blue balls.' i never believed it was real until someone on this site showed me the page about it. a guy with this condition doesn't have to cum before it gets soft, but if he goes soft without cumming he'll experience pain. i am not sure how painful it is. i have the opposite problem—i experience pain after ejaculating. it's really painful! yowch! but thankfully it doesn't happen every time.

If I have a long sex session I can go hard and soft consistently for hours on end, mostly without issue. This is more of an all day, or more commonly: an all night foreplay leading up to sex. I depends. @laura_marx has a great answer. But there's also times where, no, a guy doesn't have to come. You'll get soft again. It can be frustrating/uncomfortable/occasionally mildly painful but eventually you'll get soft again. Erections in the middle of the night are a great example, as is morning wood.
