  • Contrary to popular belief, an intact hymen doesn’t prove a woman’s virginity. In the same way, a torn hymen doesn’t mean that a woman is not a virgin.

Of course, the hymen can tear during intercourse, and it can cause pain and bleeding. However, not everyone experiences said pain. Possibly the most common myth about hymens is that you can use them to “prove” whether a woman is a virgin or not.

One study, published by Psychology Today, found that 52 percent of women who admitted to having sexual intercourse still had intact hymens. And while other sexually active women had hymenal changes, it is nearly impossible to prove those changes were from having sex.

Hymens can easily remain intact due to their elasticity. According to Psychology Today, the production of estrogen during puberty makes hymens more elastic and thus able to stretch.

While your hymen can tear during intercourse, that’s not the only trigger. We can’t prove someone has had sex because their hymen is torn. The shape and size of your hymen don’t matter when it comes to virginity.

Furthermore, some women are born with less hymenal tissue, so it looks like they don’t have a hymen. And in most cases, your hymen can stretch to accommodate tampons, menstrual cups, and yes, sexual intercourse.
And as we mentioned, many things can cause hymens to stretch or tear.

Activities like horseback riding or certain sports can tear your hymen. Hymens can also tear when inserting tampons, fingers, or sex toys. Riding a bicycle or doing splits can also change your hymen.

If your hymen is torn, that’s nothing to worry about.

  • No, emphatically, no. I have had ONLY ONE virgin in my life, and I found that the hymen, was not really close to the opening of the vagina, and I was in her vagina about halfway (about 3 inches or so) before I was in contact with her hymen.

Her hymen was VERY tough to rupture, and I considered having her go to her gynecologist and have him/her cut the hymen rather than me rupture it with my penis. Based on that, we could have had intercourse many times, with my penis in her, without rupturing her hymen, so her having an intact hymen did not preclude her having intercourse.

    • I was reading artstatues, below, and I did not add that she did bleed, a small bit, when we finally did rupture her hymen. After thinking back on it. I do wish that I had not torn her hymen, and just simply had that 'shorter' trusting intercourse with her, since it was not pleasant.

  • I've also been wondering about it myself, so I looked it up and it seems that's a myth. There are cases of women that are born without a hymen. Also many women that are born with a hymen have one that is either so thin and delicate that it breaks naturally while playing, running, or doing sports, or an elastic hymen that allow them to have sex without causing it to break (so no pain, no blood), according to Google

  • Yes, usually it can prove if a woman is a virgin or not, but people shouldn’t rely on it to prove virginity. Hymens can tear or stretch from a multitude of things, riding a bike, horseback riding, doing the splits, tampons, swimming, and of course sex acts such as masturbation or penetration.

  • Typically yes because it is torn your first time. Tampons aren’t gonna do that lol

    • …Yes, they can tear or stretch your hymen lol.

    • Yap.

    • Really? I have never heard tampons being able to do that lol definitely interesting

  • Nope, it has to be open for a girl to menstruate. It either wears away naturally, just by your movements, or some girls break it themselves for the same reason. It's all in the book, "All About Hymens" by Buster Hyman.

  • No it does not! Hymen can be broken from many other ways and nothing that has to do with sex. There is also several reasons for the bleeding as the vagina tissue is very sensative and tender for one thing.

  • It depends on how you define "virgin."

  • Nope not at all.

also what is a virgin, my view, it’s very much a social construct used to control people

if she decides she likes that cucumber, has she lost her virginity to a cucumber?

What if she has anal sex, is she still a virgin?

What about lesbians, a girl never has sex with a guy only girls, can she be classed as a virgin if she never has any penetration with her partner.

One of reasons for bleeding is not being turned on enough, being dry and position with friction etc.

As you posed the question, What is a Virgin?

  • Hey I'm in is not something that tears and is done for good. When it tears it heals again. This is such a broad ridiculous misconception

  • No. It just means she has no hymen for any number of reasons

  • Yes it's a proof.

Does the female hymen prove whether a girl is a virgin or not 🤔?
  • No lmfao

  • No, absolutely not.

  • Niet. Society made it up.

  • The virgin indicator apart, I think it should not even matter if the girl is virgin or not. The girl is with you and that it!

But to answer your question... The hymen is the single most unreliable virginity indicator. Not good.

  • An intact hymen generally means a virgin, but a broken hymen does not. There are many ways, other than having sex, that a hymen can be broken.

  • Old wives' tale that is completely false! Most active girls tear them when young. I have heard most are not completely closed and they are slowly evolving to be non-existent. In the "Dark Era of Europe" the morning after marriage it was important to hang the blood-stained sheets out the window to prove you married a virgin.

  • Nope

  • Yes, but the lack of one does not prove she is not a virgin.

  • From what I've heard, a girls hymen is possible to break by simply riding a bike so judging by that, it's unreliable to decide for yourself if a girl is a virgin by the hymen being intact or not

  • No. A girl can tear her hymen lots of ways other than by being penetrated. Plus I’ve heard it’s theoretically possible to have sex and still have an intact hymen.

  • I don't think so. I did not bled the first time I had sex.

  • Not always... it can break in many daily life processes at any age... also I've read a case where this girl still had hymen after having kids even... so in some cases girl can be virgin w no hymen... or in some cased she can have hymen but already has had sex
