It can be a little bit yeah, in my experience at least. I've had sex with total strangers, and with people I've known for years. Both were a little awkward at first but once you find your groove it's fine. Funnily enough some of the best sex I've had was with someone I'd just met that same day. We spent two weeks together after that first day and we just clicked, it was great.

And another time I got together with a girl I'd known for years and it was pretty awkward. Not sure why, maybe because we had that friendship on the line.
