The faux wife, fiancé or girlfriend of a gay man was once (and may well STILL be for all I know) known colloquially as his ‘beard’. A beard’s *job* was, as you know, to provide plausible deniability to any gossip or rumors regarding the gay man’s true sexual orientation which might begin circulating in those days when such deniability might be a very important part of his successful passage through life.

Since only naive utopian fools focus overmuch on what’s *fair* in life, it’s not really on my radar screen and I can’t honestly rank it’s ‘fairosity index’.
It was simply a generally effective work-around that served those who needed it well enough, even though it was arguably a fucked-up situation that they had to use it.
