Yeah, it’s simple and effective, and since you’re trying it’s a great way to start. Don’t use tape, use some kind of string. The only obvious downside is that if it’s cotton it will dry up the mouth. So you cannot use it for a long time. And also no drooling, which can be part of the gag experience. A decent ball gag would be a nice upgrade if you’re into it.
