For most people, having sex leads to feelings of attachment and it is impossible for most people to go backwards in a relationship. You can't have sex, develop romantic feelings, and then go back to just being platonic friends. Yes, there is some risk in crossing that line.
On the other hand, many people say that they want their sexual/romantic partner to also be their best friend. If you decide to move forward, you are already friends, you know each other, and the relationship you develop may become close to ideal for you.

@OlderAndWiser There's a difference between dating a friend and having sex with a friend, though. Those are two different things. I don't think there's anything wrong with dating someone you're already friends with, but you have to actually establish a romantic connection with them and define the relationship before you start getting sexual.
