First of all, good for you! It means you have not entirely detached sex from emotion, which puts you ahead of most people!

On the other hand, I'm very sorry. I talked to my very intelligent boyfriend about this, and we came up with what we think is the best solution. During sex, flirt. If he reacts badly, it was just all part of the fun. If he reacts well, you can just take it up a notch. Most men are obsessed with sensation, so I would totally recommend just having a no-sex, pure makeout session with him. I've done them before, and they get INTENSE. Later, after dropping hints like that, consider just hitting verbally, or asking hypothetical questions.
