Well, this is just me, but I wouldn't go for the biggest one in the store, because the ones they usually carry in the store are small. Most stores you find in the mall, or even separate branch dealers (Kays, Helzburg, etc.) don't have any diamond over 1 carat.

For my girlfriend, I customized a ring, which includes a 1.6 carat VS diamond at a center stone. This was a custom order, and required that the diamonds be shipped in for me to view, and pick out the one I wanted. It cost over $10k.

The only reason I didn't go larger was because her fingers and hands are pretty small- and because she works with her hands in the dental field, and works out every day, so she probably won't wear it too often.

I didn't buy my wife's solely on size alone. I wanted a one carat diamond, but cut, color, and clarity also mattered. It ended up about.96 carats.

Would not buy a diamond at all. It's the biggest scam in the world. The price of diamonds are "fake". Besides there are several rings that looks more beautiful. I would design a ring myself with her in mind. Then no one would have that one ring.

My wife actually preferred sapphire so got a medium sized one with 2 smaller diamonds on the side. She has tiny fingers, was difficult enough to get one in her size
